Heartstopper Season 3 is coming to Netflix, which is good for viewers who were captivated by the first installment with its sweet story of adolescent LGBTQ+ love and its many forms. Revolving around Charlie and Nick, their love story has already proven to be one for centuries, and Netflix has been praised for recognizing the significance of depicting this type of love on screen.
Netflix released Heartstopper to a global audience on April 22, 2022. The series is based on the same-titled graphic novel and webcomic. The show provided audiences with a well-structured story of love and companionship and paved the way for more on-screen representation of frequently marginalized communities. Heartstopper Season 3 Potential Release Date: When will it be available on Netflix?
Unfortunately, Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for Heartstopper Season 3. Most, if not all, fans can recall that Season 1 premiered in April 2022, and Season 2 did not arrive until August 2023. If this trend continues, the imminent third installment may premiere in late 2024.
It also remains unclear whether the ongoing strikes of writers and actors, which have halted the production of several television series and movies in Hollywood, will affect the production of Heartstopper Season 3. However, series creator Alice Oseman confirmed to Entertainment Weekly earlier this month that she has been “actively writing” the story of the show’s third installment, saying:
“We did not expect to get a Season 3 renewal at the same time as Season 2 because that’s quite rare, to be honest. What that did do is it gave us more time to think about what’s gonna happen in Season 3.”
Heartstopper Season 3 Cast: Who are the actors included in the upcoming season?
Heartstopper would not be the same program without the return of Joe Locke and Kit Connor as Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson, respectively. So, they are both expected to return for Heartstopper Season 3. As the couple advances their relationship, their closest friends Elle Argent, played by Yasmin Finney, Tao Xu, portrayed by William Gao, Tara Jones, played by Corinna Brown, Darcy Olssen, portrayed by Kizzy Edgell, and Isaac Henderson, played by Tobie Donovan, are expected to support them.
Sebastian Croft, who portrays Ben, has verified that he will not return for Heartstopper Season 3. In the final episode of Season 2, Ben told Charlie he would be departing Truham and apologized for his previous actions. However, Charlie did not let him off the hook and detailed how his toxic behavior has affected him and his way of living. Sebastian, for his part, was pleased that his incredibly complicated character was not given a straightforward redemption.
It was previously divulged that Alice Oseman decided to include Ben in Season 2 as she felt his presence to be important to the story even though the character does not appear beyond Volume One of the books. However, the same can’t be said for HeartStopper Season 3. The series creator explained to Tudum:
“As Season 2 begins to unpack the trauma that Charlie carries with him due to his toxic relationship with Ben and the bullying he has faced in the past, I felt Ben’s presence was necessary to properly address those topics. We were in constant debate about finding the line between Ben being unrealistically demonic and too sympathetic. I feel we found that line and I am so proud and honored that Sebastian has been a part of Heartstopper. I know that he’ll go on to do incredible things, and I will be cheering from the sidelines all the way.”
Heartstopper Season 3 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?
Since Season 2 was based on Volume 3 of the graphic novel series, it is safe to say that Heartstopper Season 3 will follow the events of Volume 4. This continues from where the second installment left off, with Charlie wishing to say “I love you” to Nick.
Nick has a lot on his schedule after coming out to his father and being concerned about Charlie's eating disorder, which will continue to play out in Heartstopper Season 3. Alice Oseman has had the freedom to deviate from the novels while remaining faithful to the source material; therefore, it is not impossible that Season 3 will feature new plot elements and character developments. She told Entertainment Weekly:
“I’m always very committed to preserving what is in the comics and making sure all the big, exciting moments are in the show, but honestly, there is just so much extra space around that to do whatever we want. Now that we’ve got Seasons 1 and 2, we’ve had so much development for the supporting cast: Tao, Elle, Tara, Isaac, even new characters like Imogen. There’s so much new stuff that gives us so much to play with in Season 3. I feel very comfortable letting the show be its own thing. In my mind, the show and the comic feel very separate, although it’s quite a faithful adaptation. I feel excited to get to expand Heartstopper for the show.”
It can also be recalled that, prior to the publication of the second season, Oseman was asked to describe Heartstopper Season 3 in one word and responded, "Love." Meanwhile, Joe Locke stated in the production notes that he is unaware of the plot details for the forthcoming installment, but that he would like to see Charlie and Mr. Ajayi interact, which is something he wished they could have included in Season 2 but they simply did not have time for.
