After the previous episode featured Lakan’s backstory and finally revealed Maomao’s biological mom, Fengxian, The Apothecary Diaries Episode 24, titled Jinshi and Maomao, would return its focus to its two main characters. These two have been making fans fall in love with their fun banters and incredible rapport, and many have been waiting for a romance to bloom between them. Now that the series is about to end, the preview for its upcoming finale shows Jinshi finally confessing to Maomao, though it’s not for what viewers may think.

The Apothecary Diaries Episode 24 teaser begins with Jinshi seemingly whispering something to Maomao’s ears, making his face inching closer to her. The next montage of scenes features sequences from the previous episodes featuring the two, from the time Jinshi saw Maomao dolled up as she returned to Verdigris House to the latter saving the eunuch from dying after a pillar almost fell on him. But before the preview ends, Jinshi is seen screaming at Maomao, as the latter seems to be looking at nowhere and not herself.
Aside from focusing on Jinshi and Maomao, the finale stills also feature Lakan. The first one sees the military tactician holding the blue rose that seems to be from Maomao while looking at it with a sad face. A different Maomao appears, letting her hair flow and wearing a red dress while looking at someone. A young Maomao is also revealed, hinting at another backstory from her youth.
In addition, Jinshi and Maomao are conversing while atop the roof. An emotional and surprised-looking Lakan is also revealed while tears fall from his one eye. For the final still, chibby versions of Gaoshun, Maomao, and Suiren appear, as the latter pinches the poison maiden’s face.

What to Expect from The Apothecary Diaries Episode 24
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 24 will see Lakan freeing a courtesan from the Verdigris House after losing to the game of banqi with Maomao. But while he takes her hand amid the line of beautiful women, Lakan hears a woman's voice singing and opens a door to see her. Jinshi will call Maomao to talk about Lakan, finally confessing about Lakan, the reason behind his obsession with her, and his ill feelings toward him.

Rakan loses to Maomao and has to sacrifice the prostitute of Ryokuseikan. As Arhat tries to take Baibai's hand in the midst of all the gorgeous women lined up, he hears a singing voice coming from the door she opens... Meanwhile, Maomao is called to Jinshi's house and talks about Rakan's troubles, his reasons for being obsessed with Maomao, and his complicated feelings towards his father. A few days later, at night, I saw a cat and a cat dancing beautifully on the castle wall.
The anime is based on the light novel of the same title written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. It has been serialized online since 2011 and was published as a novel with a single volume in 2012 and as a light novel in 2014. J-Novel Club has licensed its digital and Square Enix its print releases in North America. It was then adapted into two manga in 2017, which Shogakukan and Square Enix published. Square Enix has also licensed its English release with illustrations by Nekokurage. In addition, Toho Animation Studio and OLM produced its anime adaptation, premiering in October 2023 and releasing 23 episodes.
