The previous episode of The Apothecary Diaries was the talk of the town for being both emotional and disturbing. After fans worried for Maomao following the incident she had been through to save Jinshi, the preview for The Apothecary Diaries Episode 20, titled Mandala Flower, sees the poison maiden back on her feet and is ready to take on a new mission again in the palace.

The Apothecary Diaries Episode 20 teaser shows Maomao lying with bandages on her face after a guard hit her with a club. Lihaku then rushes to Jinshi, who looks surprised by the visit. A man starts to tear up while a group of officials exits what looks like a warehouse. The next scene reveals Maomao grinning while talking to Suiren and wiping the dishes dry. Later, Maomao is seen attacking a mysterious man.
Alternatively, the new episode still features Maomao’s bandaged face while recovering from the attack. She’s then having a serious discussion with Jinshi, while she appears enthusiastic and back to her usual self after regaining her strength in another preview. Maomao joins Suiren, who looks all dolled up, as she makes a comical face. Gaoshun, Jinshi, and Maomao stand tall as they seem to start a new investigation. For the last still, a beautiful woman appears.

What to Expect from The Apothecary Diaries Episode 20
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 20 will see the aftermath of the incident that happened in the previous episode. After learning that Jinshi led the recent festival, Maomao will be surprised to learn of his position. She’s also about to discover that an unexpected person is involved in the incident. But despite everything that has happened, Maomao will get excited to see a new drug.

Neomako breaks into the festival and saves Jinji despite being seriously injured, and deduces the connection between a series of incidents related to the festival, including the theft of ritual utensils and the death of the person in charge of the utensils. Maomako feels horrified by Jinji's position as he was in charge of the festival, and by the fact that an unexpected person was also involved in this incident. On the other hand, Maomako can't hide her surprise when she learns of the existence of an impossible drug...
The anime is based on the light novel of the same title written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Shosetsuka ni Naro. It has been serialized online since 2011. It was then published as a novel with a single volume after being acquired by Shufunotomo in 2012 and as a light novel in 2014. Come 2017, it was adapted into two manga, published by Shogakukan and Square Enix.
The light novel is licensed digitally in North America by J-Novel Club and in print by Square Enix. The latter also licensed its manga illustrated by Nekokurage in English. In addition, Toho Animation Studio and OLM produce its anime adaptation, premiering in October 2023 and releasing 19 episodes so far.
