Maomao will rest from her investigative journey in The Apothecary Diaries Episode 17, titled Walking Around Town. After the previous episode saw Jinshi asking Maomao to put makeup on him, it looks like the poison expert will do as he bids. In fact, in the preview stills for the new episode, Jinshi has just had his major transformation by Maomao.
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 17 teaser shows Maomao kissing Jinshi’s hand, while the next scene reveals she’s putting foundation and lipstick on him with her fingers. While Jinshi removes his robe, Maomao can’t help but stare and smile. She’s then seen in the town with a glamorous look while checking some vegetables. From there, the two walk around, and no one seems to notice Jinshi with his different look.
Alternatively, the preview stills show how Maomao transforms Jinshi’s appearance from manly to feminine. The first preview reveals how Maomao puts makeup on Jinshi after fixing his hair and putting it in a half ponytail. Of course, Maomao also dolls up as she and Jinshi walk together around town. A stunning still of Maomao is revealed as she holds two food skewers while out and about.
There are also chibby versions of Maomao, Gaoshun, and Suiren. Gaoshun and Suiren look surprised as Maomao kneels before Jinshi and kisses his hand. For the last still, Jinshi and Maomao look together as they travel in the carriage.

What to Expect from The Apothecary Diaries Episode 17
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 17 will see Jinshi asking Maomao to change his look with makeup. She uses powder to make him look sunburned, wraps a cloth around his body to appear heavier, and lets him wear civilian clothes. When she’s done, she wants to return home but is stopped by Suiren and Gaoshun. So, to continue her plan, she disguises herself and walks around the city with Jinshi.

Jinji, a beautiful woman who could be the cause of the country's destruction, asks Maomako to use makeup to transform her into a different person. Jinji applies powder to make him look sunburned, wraps a robe around his body to give him an ungainly figure, and transforms into a different person by wearing civilian clothes. After finishing her work, Maomao thinks about returning home for a long break, but she is stopped by Suiren and Gaoshun and ends up having to disguise herself, so she ends up walking around the city with Jinshi.
The anime is based on the light novel series written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. It has been serialized online on Shosetsuka ni Naro since 2011. It was later acquired by Shufunotomo and published as a novel in 2012 with a single volume and as a light novel in 2014. In 2017, it was adapted into two manga published by Square Enix and Shogakukan. It’s licensed in English digitally by J-Novel Club and in print and manga, illustrated by Nekokurage, by Square Enix. An anime adaptation by Toho Animation and OLM premiered in October 2023 and released 16 episodes.
