After investigating and confronting Fengming’s supposed crimes in the previous episode, fans are about to see a different Maomao in The Apothecary Diaries Episode 12, titled The Eunuch and the Courtesan. Far different from the mad scientist and poison maiden viewers often see, Maomao will be a courtesan in the next episode, and the new stills and teaser show a dolled-up version of her. The Apothecary Diaries Episode 12 brief teaser starts with a sad-looking Maomao, and the next scene features her talking to Jinshi in his office. She’s then dressed to the nines as she joins the courtesans at the Verdigris House while being looked after by Madam.
Later, she returns to her normal clothing while holding a bag on her back when Jinshi appears. Back at the brothel, the women start performing while Maomao and Jinshi sit together. The preview ends with Maomao sitting with a sad look in her eyes.
Alternatively, the stills show Maomao holding her things at her back, followed by Jinshi slumping on the floor while Gaoshun looks at him. A solo preview of Maomao looking surprised is then revealed. The next shows Maomao with Jinshi, and the latter looks problematic as his face is on his hand. Lastly, a woman is putting some makeup on Maomao's face, preparing her for her new work.

What to expect from The Apothecary Diaries Episode 12
The punishment Fengming has to face doesn’t only extend to her relatives but also to everyone related to her, including the merchant’s house where Maomao was sold to the kidnappers. This means Maomao has to leave the palace after being fired, leaving her with no choice but to return to the red-light district.
Maomao once again works at her old home, Verdigris House. One night, after visiting the mansion where the princesses, Bailing, Nyuka, and Meibai, are, she sees someone familiar.

The anime is based on the Japanese light novel series of the same name written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. It has been serialized online since 2011 on Shosetsuka ni Naro and was acquired by Shufunotomo in 2012 to publish as a novel with a single volume in 2012 and as a light novel in 2014.
In 2017, it was published in two manga by Square Enix in Monthly Big Gangan and by Shogakukan in Monthly Sunday Gene-X. J-novel Club licensed the light novel digitally in North America and Square Enix licensed the print; the latter also licensed the manga illustrated by Nekokurage. Toho Animation and OLM adapted the series into anime, premiering in October 2023.
