The anime, which is based on the light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec, has teased that a new Sword Art Online movie is in production for Kirito and his friends.
The official announcement for the upcoming Sword Art Online movie was made on X (formerly Twitter), following the first terrestrial broadcast of Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night, which is a new original film project announced in 2022. The tweet thanked viewers for watching the broadcast, and announced: "A completely new theatrical anime is in production. Please wait for further information!"
What is Sword Art Online about?
Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online light novel series started publication on ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 2009, and it spawned multiple TV anime adaptations, manga, movies, and spin-off light novels. The latest anime of the franchise was Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld: Part II, which broadcasted in the Summer 2020 anime season. A feature film titled Ordinal Scale was also released.
The Progressive movie series is based on the light novel of the same title, which features the story of Sword Art Online's first arc.
