Amid the fear that Netflix will cancel Sweet Magnolias Season 4 after the previous season featured a fitting conclusion for Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen’s stories, the streamer has given it a greenlight just three months after Season 3’s ending. And now that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended after meeting resolutions following months of rallies, the series finally gets a welcoming production update. So, here’s everything we know so far.
Netflix officially announced the coming of Sweet Magnolias Season 4 in October 2023. Though fans were quite skeptical about the renewal due to the third season’s lack of a major cliffhanger, the life stories of the three best friends, Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, are bound to continue.
When did Sweet Magnolias Season 4 start its production?
The series creator Sheryl J. Anderson and executive producer/director Normal Buckley announced that the filming of Sweet Magnolias Season 4 officially began on January 9. The two shared production photos of the series on their respective Instagram accounts, giving fans a glimpse of the first on-set pictures.
Though the images only feature the writing and creative team working on the filming before the cast’s arrival, fans already celebrated this news. Why? As soon as the cameras start rolling, it only means the new season will soon hit the small screen.
After the writers' strike ended, Anderson revealed the writing process for Sweet Magnolias Season 4 had begun. In another post on Instagram, the creator posted a photo of the show’s group of writers working on the new season. “Now that the news is out, I thought you might enjoy meeting the brilliant people working with me to craft Season 4 of SWEET MAGNOLIAS,” she captioned the snap.
She then introduced the writers one by one: Bianca Sams, me, Alex Rubin, Barret Helms with his dog Tilly, Kale Futterman with her puppy Charlie, Anthony Epling, Sara Jumel, and Sean Benum. Anderson even teased what would happen in the fourth season, revealing fans would surely love what these writers were creating.
What to Expect from Sweet Magnolias Season 4?
Fans will again see Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen in their Serenity, South Carolina hometown. And though the third season ended on a high note, with Dana and Ronnie renewing their vows, Helen reuniting with Erick, and Maddie in a happy relationship with Cal, they will continue to live their lives between relationships, families, and careers in Sweet Magnolias Season 4.
In an interview with Tudum, Anderson revealed that the new season would explore the conflicts introduced in the third season finale. It would analyze the twists and turns of the besties’ relationships and the complexity of their friendship. Of course, big surprises would also come into their lives and reveal how grateful they would be for the people around them.
In addition, JoAnna Garcia Swisher dropped a big tease about Sweet Magnolias Season 4. While sharing a behind-the-scenes clip on Instagram, the actress thanked everyone who had supported the show and revealed that the fourth installment would be a “big one,” so fans should “buckle up.”
When is Sweet Magnolias Season 4 expected to be released?
Netflix has yet to announce when Sweet Magnolias Season 4 will be released, but the show only takes a little while to film. The second season started filming in April and ended in July 2021, releasing in February 2022, while the third season’s production commenced in July 2022 and wrapped up in October 2022, premiering in July 2023.
That said, as it only takes about four months for the series to complete its production, the filming for the fourth season is expected to be completed in April 2024. However, it will still be up to Netflix when to release the new season. It took the third season a year before it finally hit the small screen after its production began. Though it might not happen again, a summer premiere seems to be not viable this time. The most feasible release prediction is in the fall of 2024.
Are you excited to see Sweet Magnolias Season 4? If the release prediction comes true, we may see the incredible friendship of Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen play out again this year. All seasons of Sweet Magnolias are available to stream on Netflix.
