Netflix is now setting up the stage for the third and final season of its hit apocalyptic horror series Sweet Home. In a matter of days, the final battle of the monsters, neohumans, and humans will begin, and fans will soon see who will win among the three races. So, with the return of Lee Do-hyun’s Lee Eun-hyuk and a reunion waiting to happen, director Lee Eung-bok teases Sweet Home Season 3 will be a “comeback home.”
During the media conference for Sweet Home Season 3, held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Seoul on Wednesday, July 17, the cast discussed the show’s upcoming final episodes. Eung-bok revealed that the series would reach an "epic finale," in which characters separated in previous seasons would finally reunite.
“I can say the third season is literally a comeback home. It feels like returning home,” he said via The Korea Times. “It's a story about friends, comrades, and scattered characters encountering each other again.”
Telling the story of the residents of an apartment called Green Home, they find themselves trapped in the building after a mysterious infection outbreak. They all struggle to survive with the appearance of gigantic monsters, and several also become infected. The first season was a huge success, becoming the first K-drama to enter Netflix’s Top 10 in the US, ranking as high as third and receiving 22 million views.
However, though the second season also managed to be part of the global top 10 chart, it received criticism for lacking the character relationships that made the first season loved by many. Eung-bok acknowledged this negative reaction, hoping that Sweet Home Season 3 would give viewers even greater entertainment, surpassing the first two seasons.
“(Season 3) brings back many things, and I hope the excitement comes back, too,” he continued.
Eung-bok also teased the final season would bring together all the events that had unfolded in the previous seasons, tying all the loose ends to give an epic conclusion. However, the only difference would be that the characters would feature changes after everything they experienced in the first and second seasons.
“The differentiation is that the characters who have gone through various experiences in the first and second seasons undergo changes in their abilities and produce results,” he explained.
Go Min-si Teases What to Expect from Sweet Home Season 3
Go Min-si, who plays the role of Lee Eun-yu, teased what fans could expect from Sweet Home Season 3. The 29-year-old star is confident that viewers will love the final season as each character will be even more charming this time.
“I've watched Season 3 three times already, and I found it very enjoyable,” she said via K-Vibe.
Min-si also revealed that Eun-yu’s desperate wish to bring Song Kang’s Cha Hyun-soo back to their fold and her much-awaited reunion with her brother, Eun-hyuk, will be the major parts of the third season. Despite her hard-headed and strong character, she only wants to survive to protect everyone she loves.
“I wanted to portray her complex emotions, especially when she meets her lost brother Eun-hyuk again,” she added.
In addition, Lee Jin-wook, who plays Pyeon Sang-wook, whose body is possessed by Nam Sang-won, shares his belief that monsterization is humanity’s last hope. He even teased that all the stories from the previous seasons would finally conclude this time and hinted that Sang-wook could still retain his body.
“I pondered a lot about how much control Nam Sang-won has over Pyeon Sang-wook's body,” he stated. “Since Pyeon Sang-wook is a formidable character, watch to see how much of his body he can retain.”
Judging by their statements, it looks like Sweet Home Season 3 will come full circle. After everything the characters have gone through in the first two seasons, they may all return home in the finale.
Sweet Home Season 3 is set to release on Netflix on Friday, July 19.
