If Finn Wolfhard could have his way, he wanted the war to end in Stranger Things Season 5.

The highly anticipated Stranger Things Season 5 is now in the works after being significantly delayed due to the Hollywood strikes in 2023. The show’s production officially began in January 2024—almost two years after the fourth season left everyone on the edge of their seat with its cliffhanging finale. But as many want to know how the hit Netflix series will end, one of its main stars, Finn Wolfhard, admits the cast is also left in the dark about its ending and reveals how he likes it to conclude instead.

In an interview with Access Online to promote his latest movie, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire with McKenna Grace, Wolfhard, who has played Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things since it debuted in 2016, talked about the series’ final season and made a big revelation about its ongoing production. Just like fans, the Canadian actor revealed that they, too, have no idea how the series will end, given that they haven’t read the script for the final episode yet.

“They're waiting to give us the last episode,” he said. “We've read up to the second-to-last episode, so we're all on the edge of our seats to find out what the ending is.”

The 21-year-old revealed what he wanted to see at the end of the series. And just like many wanted, he liked it to be a happy one.

“Truly, I would love a Lord of the Rings-style happy ending,” he continued.

For a little refresher, the final installment to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King, ended on a happy note. After Gollum stole the most dangerous One Ring from Frodo, he plunged into the fiery pits, causing the ring to be destroyed. This resulted in Sauron’s death, knowing he wouldn’t exist without its power. And as Mordor collapsed, the war was finally over.

What to Expect from Stranger Things Season 5

Netflix has to reveal the synopsis for Stranger Things Season 5, but the series’ co-creator Ross Duffer revealed it would put Will Byer back in the spotlight. After taking center stage in the first season, the focus would be again on Noah Schnapp’s role as it would continuously explore his character.

“This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together,” he told Variety.

From being a young, introverted boy who has often been protected, Will will come out of his shell. However, aside from his sexuality, Ross explained that part of his journey is “coming into his own as a young man.”

Stranger Things Season 5 is set to be released on Netflix in 2025. Though nothing is known about the final season, fans expect it to be epic, knowing the show is one of the streamer’s flagship series. So, hopefully, the conclusion would be as good as Wolfhard wanted it to be.
