Star Wars: The Acolyte is filled with mystery. Well, it wouldn’t be a mystery thriller for nothing. It will feature the mysterious deaths of the Jedi and the secret that surrounds Amandla Stenberg’s character as Mae. As fans have to wait for each episode to know the answers to their questions, showrunner Leslye Headland teases a “spiral storytelling” similar to her Netflix TV series, Russian Doll.

In an interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Headland confirmed that The Acolyte is a mystery and will be similar to Russian Doll. The series will only give viewers new information per episode, calling it a “spiral of storytelling." Though it will be a “much larger landscape” for the show, the creator warned that what fans are about to see can deceive them.

“You’re going to think the show is one thing, but then it’s going to gearshift into something else and then do it again,” she said.

The new Star Wars series is now shaping up to be different from other Lucasfilm shows on Disney+, like Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka, with its mysterious theme. It will be the first series set in the High Republic, introducing a new live-action era in the Galaxy. But despite seemingly veering away from the franchise’s tone, Headland promised it would still be every inch like Star Wars by giving a nod to its every era.

“It’s a show packed with everything I wanted to explore: I wanted EU [Expanded Universe] stuff in there, references to the original trilogy, The Phantom Menace, the Disney sequels… it’s absolutely packed,” she said. “Because you never know, you may not get the chance again.”

The film director added that she wanted to honor the camera moves of the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas. To do that, she talked to the series’ cinematographer, Chris Teague, after getting inspiration from the original trilogy, which became their “touchpoint” for how to create the new world of The Acolyte. As a result, she revealed the series’ first episode would be a “bit more thematic.”

What is Star Wars: The Acolyte about?

The Acolyte will tell the story of Jedi Master Sol as he goes on a new journey to find the culprit behind the mysterious killings of Jedi in the Galaxy. But amid his quest, he will meet a dangerous warrior, Mae, from his past. These two will work together despite their conflict to find the mysterious murderer. However, they will find themselves on a dark path and discover evil forces that are more sinister than they thought.

You can read the synopsis below:
