The eight-episode Star Wars: Skeleton Crew series recently concluded with the release of its season finale, The Real Good Guys, and now fans are wondering if it will be renewed for a second season. Now, Skeleton Crew creators Jon Watts and Christopher Ford have shared why the series doesn't reveal more of Jod Na Nawood's (played by Jude Law) backstory, while also teasing their plans for a possible Season 2.
Shortly after the finale aired on Disney+, Watts and Ford were interviewed by Entertainment Weekly to talk about the show. Regarding the show's future, Watts revealed that they have “ideas” for a second season, and while they hope to talk about what's next for the series, they “haven’t gotten deep into those conversations,” citing the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, where most of their colleagues reside. But Watts expressed excitement and said the positive reception from the fans.
Ford went on to share the reasoning on why Skeleton Crew doesn't dive deep into Jod's backstory. "The challenge though was, as fascinating as Jod is, we always wanted to keep it from the kids’ perspective,” he explained. “The kids are like, ‘I don’t understand this guy.’ They’ve never been out in the galaxy and met someone as damaged as him. So I don’t think we could have done a flashback in this season.”
While the lack of flashback in Skeleton Crew Season 1 is understandable, both Ford and Watts agreed there is a chance to explore more of Jod's backstory down the line. Jod turned out to be one of the most pivotal characters in Star Wars lore, so he's someone who definitely deserves to be fleshed out, even if it's in a different medium. After all, the end of the show's finale left Jod's fate uncertain, so hopefully, his history will be explored further in the future.
Has Skeleton Crew been renewed for Season 2?
While Skeleton Crew received positive reviews from critics and audiences, with a 90% Critics Score and 80% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has not been officially renewed for a second season at the time of this writing. Ford and Watts have talked about the possibility of Skeleton Crew Season 2 before, with plans to incorporate a time jump to account for the child actors growing up.
There are also rumors that characters introduced in Skeleton Crew will appear in Dave Filoni's upcoming New Republic film, which is set to serve as a culmination of storylines featured in other Star Wars series such as Ahsoka and The Mandalorian. However, this rumor hasn't officially been confirmed.
All 8 episodes of Skeleton Crew are now streaming on Disney+.
