Star Wars: Dave Filoni Weighs in on Darksaber vs Lightsaber Debate

The Mandalorian has finally introduced the Darksaber into live-action and although it was been destroyed in the third season, Star Wars fans continue to wonder whether it is better than most lightsabers. Luckily, Dave Filoni has finally shared his thoughts on the iconic weapon's true strength.

Dave Filoni clearly knows his stuff when it comes to Star Wars. After all, the Ahsoka executive producer first worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars before turning his attention to the live-action MandoVerse. So when Star Wars quizzed Filoni about the whole Darksaber vs lightsaber debate, he was ready with an answer that was well-thought-out and undoubtedly acceptable for any fan.

"It’s not that it’s necessarily more powerful than any other lightsaber -- in fact, you can make a strong argument that it’s not," Filoni said of the Darksaber. "It’s an old, old, old lightsaber. For all I know, it has limitations. It’s obviously not a style that’s been replicated, and you can imagine that’s because Tar Vizsla understood something and added a Mandalorian twist to it that no one’s been able to replicate since. It’s a flat blade of energy, which is bizarre."

Sure, the Darksaber is unique because of its origins. On the other hand, it's probably better off as a symbol of Mandalorian royalty than a weapon.

The History of the Darksaber

The Darksaber, which was initially introduced in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, holds a significant place in Mandalorian lore. Crafted by the Mandalorian Jedi Tarre Vizsla, this unique lightsaber has traversed Mandalorian history, symbolizing the call for warriors to ascend to the Mandalorian throne. It was found by Sabine Wren, who surrendered the weapon to Bo-Katan Kryze in Star Wars: Rebels.

The Darksaber made its transition into the realm of live-action in The Mandalorian's first season finale and has continued to play a pivotal role in the unfolding narrative of the show's third season.

Unfortunately, the Darksaber was the main casualty in the final battle in The Mandalorian Season 3. By the end of the episode, it was unclear if Din Djarin managed to retrieve and fix it so that Kryze could use it again. However, some fans still believe that it would be restored and continue to be a symbol for the Mandalorians in the future.
