Netflix is now capitalizing on the success of its hit series Squid Game by transforming the show into a reality competition called Squid Game: The Challenge. Dubbed the biggest ever due to its hundreds of participants and multimillion-dollar cash prize, the streamer reportedly plans to change its release strategy to create more buzz.
Squid Game: The Challenge will see the games from the globally famous Korean survival drama turned into reality. From Red Light, Green Light to Sugar Honeycombs to Hopscotch, among others, these will be played by real people in real life. Fortunately, there will be no deaths here, but not winning that big cash prize will be a huge heartbreak.
So, as fans expect to watch this in one sitting, just like Netflix’s other releases, Deadline claimed that the streaming giant is weighing the possibility of not releasing its entire episode in one go. Sure, the service is known for pioneering binge-watching, but this may change with Squid Game: The Challenge to create some buzz around it.
If it happens, this won’t be the first time that Netflix follows this practice. It did the same thing with other reality shows, like Too Hot to Handle and The Circle. Alternatively, it released two episodes of Physical: 100 every Tuesday.
As streamers are experimenting with different release strategies, insiders say that Netflix aims to do this to “create appointment” to Squid Game: The Challenge viewers. However, it has yet to confirm or deny the claim.
