Spider-Verse Producer Addresses Rumors About the Sequel's Scrapped Material

The animated Spider-Verse franchise got off to a strong start with the success of its first movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in 2018. After five years, the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was finally released, achieving the same critical and commercial success as its predecessor. However, as many now await the third and final installment, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, insider Jeff Sneider claimed it would be delayed until 2027 and that Sony had scrapped much of its content for creative reasons. To set the record straight, franchise producer and writer Chris Miller has addressed the rumors regarding the scrapped material.

In a post on X, Miller slammed Sneider’s claim that Sony might move Beyond the Spider-Verse’s release to 2027 to make room for Zendaya and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4, which had finally found its director with Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. He also denied that parts of the third film were scrapped for a major creative overhaul.

“Nothing has been scrapped,” he said. “The reels are coming along nicely.”

Before Miller shared his reaction, Spider-Verse music composer Daniel Pemberton took to social media to address the claims. While he liked to steer clear from the issue, he also denied Sneider’s revelations, stressing that not everything on the internet was true.

“Don’t really ever want to weigh in on this sort of stuff BUT would you ever believe there could sometimes be stuff on the internet that might not always be particularly accurate? Hmmmm…” he wrote.

For starters, Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally set to release in March 2024 but was indefinitely delayed after being removed from the schedule board due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. However, there were rumors that the delay had something to do with behind-the-scenes drama, with over 100 artists allegedly leaving the project due to bad working conditions.

What to Expect from Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

While details about Beyond the Spider-Verse remain under wraps, it’s expected to continue where Across the Spider-Verse left off. Miles Morales has found himself at odds with the Spider Society for having powers he shouldn’t have, which causes a domino effect that puts all the spider-people’s interconnected realities at risk.

After running away from Spider-Man 2099 to try to change his father’s fate, Miles gets stuck in the hostile Earth 42, where Spider-Man doesn't exit. So, after meeting a villainous version of himself, the third movie may begin with Miles confronting his own variant, who has become the Prowler, while Gwen and her new allies may try to save him.

However, there are also theories that Miles may team up with Prowler and the latter’s uncle Aaron after being depicted as nice in the now-deleted unused Spider-Verse test footage posted on X by one of the directors, Kemp Powers. Prowler was also described as a “vigilante” in Spider-Verse concept art. So, things may change between Prowler and Miles when the movie finally releases.
