Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is the upcoming sequel to Sony's animated Spider-Man trilogy. It will conclude the Miles Morales trilogy, bringing a satisfying closure to this unique character and storytelling. The first film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was a massive success, introducing a multiverse-based storyline that raised the bar for animated filmmaking. It also received an Oscar in 2018.

Five years later, the second part, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, continues the awe-inspiring journey, grossing more than $560 million worldwide. The animated movie concluded with a significant cliffhanger, leaving many crucial storylines unresolved. The sequel will continue the adventures of Miles Morales as he thwarts Spot's plan to wreak havoc on the multiverse.

Let’s see a comprehensive breakdown of all the information we currently know about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse currently does not have a confirmed release date. Initially announced in 2021, Beyond the Spider-Verse was originally slated for release on March 29, 2024. However, in July 2023, Sony revealed that the film had been taken off the studio's release schedule. This was due to the ongoing strikes and they are reportedly exploring alternative release dates.

Current predictions suggest that the film might not hit theaters until 2025. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie's creators, recently spoke with Digital Spy about the film's release. They indicated they're taking time to ensure its quality due to the recent WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Lord continued, "Those conversations are thankfully above our pay grade, but I can tell you we're already hard at work on it, and we'll take the time it takes to make it great."

What is the plot of Spider-Man Beyond the Spider-Verse?

The impactful cliffhanger of the previous movie provides strong hints about this movie’s story direction, even though the details are strongly guarded. Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to follow the story of Miles Morales as he becomes entangled with the Spider Society.

The upcoming Spider-Verse will begin with Miles confronting an alternate version of himself, now assuming the identity of the Prowler. Gwen and her new allies will embark on a mission to rescue Miles from his predicament. At the same time, Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, will work to protect the integrity of the multiverse.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller express interest in exploring the visual distinctness of this alternate Miles and the unique narrative.

Gwen, previously expelled from the group, seeks help from other Spider-People, including Peter B. Parker, to help Miles. The situation escalates with the inclusion of the criminal Spot, intent on destroying universes and risking Miles' father's life unless stopped. Jason Schwartzman, the voice actor for Spot, hints that the character will be even more formidable in Spider-Verse 3.

A Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse trailer hasn't been unveiled so far. We might not get a glimpse of the movie until there's greater stability in the production process, and it's uncertain when that might occur.

The "first look" for Across the Spider-Verse was made public in December 2021, when the sequels were initially planned as Part 1 and Part 2. A full trailer was launched a year later, followed by another just a month before the movie's release.

Given this pattern, it's likely that a teaser for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse could be released within the next couple of months.

Expected to reprise their roles as directors for Beyond the Spider-Verse are the esteemed trio: Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson.

The film's production will continue to be overseen by animation powerhouses Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They are also the creative minds behind successful projects like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie, and more. Lord and Miller will also be involved in writing the film, collaborating with Dave Callaham. Callaham is the screenwriter of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Daniel Pemberton (notable for The Bad Guys) is set to return to compose the film's energetic score.

In a conversation with Joaquim Dos Santos about the upcoming movie and the concept of Gwen reuniting the group, he shared:

"That was some stuff that was cut pretty early on, just for time. We knew part of the joy of Gwen getting the band back together was the promise that you'll see them more in the next one.”

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse may be exclusively released in movie theaters whenever its release eventually takes place. Given the successful theatrical releases of both the first and second movies, it is unlikely to deviate from this pattern. A streaming release could follow ninety days after the film's theatrical debut. The exact streaming platform that Sony Pictures will collaborate with for the release remains uncertain. The production company recently joined forces with The Walt Disney Company to make many of Spider-Man's popular titles available on Disney+.

Lord and Miller emphasize that Miles' story is expansive and deserving of two movies. In the third installment, the co-directors and writers focus on a complex issue Miles must address. This involves a parallel reality born from his actions. We are excited to see what this movie will have in store for Miles’ story.
