SBS has unveiled the first official stills of veteran actor Son Hyun-joo in its upcoming medical drama Doctor X, offering an early look at the hospital power broker who will stand opposite the series lead. The images arrive as the network prepares a Friday-Saturday medical noir built around authority, compromise, and a confrontation that is expected to define the show.
Doctor X follows Gye Soo-jung (Kim Ji-won), a genius surgeon dispatched through a physician staffing agency who proves what it truly means to be a doctor through pure skill as she operates on a corruption-ridden establishment. The Korean series is based on the hit Japanese series of the same title and recasts that story as a medical noir inside Guseo University Hospital. There, a rigid hierarchy associated with white-coated power meets a so-called dark hero who refuses both failure and compromise.
In the series, branch director Boo Seung-kwon (Son Hyun-joo) struggles to rebuild the crumbling Guseo University Hospital branch and restore its former standing. He compromises with a corruption-ridden organization in order to save the hospital, yet he still harbors a dream of upholding his sense of duty as a doctor. That inner conflict becomes the center of his role once a surgeon who will not play by the hospital’s rules arrives on his floor.
Newly released stills show Boo Seung-kwon exuding the cold authority of a powerful figure who holds the fate of the hospital in his hands as he sits at a table with a sharp, piercing gaze. In other images, he appears in a doctor’s coat while standing at a podium or walking through hospital corridors, radiating the dignity of a leader. Those frames also convey the lonely charisma of a hospital director burdened with immense responsibility.
Boo Seung-kwon has upheld the hospital’s order while carrying the weight of loneliness and a responsibility that feels almost punitive. Gye Soo-jung is determined to tear that order down completely, setting up an intense conflict between the branch director and the incoming surgeon. Their clash is framed as a contest between survival through compromise and reform through uncompromising skill.
The series also places Boo Seung-kwon inside a wider hospital ecosystem that includes Jang Hee-sook (Lee Jung-eun), the sharp strategist who heads the staffing agency that sends Gye Soo-jung into the branch. Intern Park Tae-kyung (Kim Woo-seok) adds another point of pressure inside the same struggling institution the director is trying to keep alive. Those surrounding relationships isolate Boo Seung-kwon as a man who must manage public authority and private doubt at the same time.
Directed by Lee Jung-rim and written by Pyeon Seong-geun, Doctor X is being produced as a 12-episode medical noir for the SBS Friday-Saturday slot. Son Hyun-joo’s branch director is positioned not as a simple villain but as a compromised leader who still wants to believe in the work of a doctor. That tension is what the new stills are designed to preview before the first episode airs.
The production team said Son Hyun-joo’s work on the character is one of the series’ central draws and described the performance in unusually strong terms. “Son Hyun Joo brought Boo Seung Kwon’s desperate sense of responsibility and complex inner world to life through his deeply immersive performance.” They continued, “Viewers will be able to witness the caliber of a true ‘acting master’ through Son Hyun Joo’s captivating performance, which radiates an overwhelming presence in every scene. Doctor X is set to premiere on October 9 at 9:50 p.m. KST on SBS and will also stream on Netflix beginning the same day. The original Japanese series of the same title was recently added to the platform, giving international viewers a chance to revisit the source story before the Korean remake arrives.
