Just as The Acolyte is about to end, Lucasfilm and Disney+ are preparing for their next Star Wars series, Skeleton Crew. The show promises to tell a coming-of-age story with a tone of classic Amblin films featuring a group of young children who will go on a journey through the galaxy far, far away. That said, episode director Lee Isaac Chung teases the upcoming show will add “a childlike perspective” to the franchise.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ during an interview for Twisters, Chung discussed what fans could expect from Skeleton Crew, revealing he could no longer wait for everyone to see the show. Created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the filmmaker said the series has a lot of “Jon Watts in it,” and anyone who’s a fan of the series creator knows he’s “very childlike in a beautiful way,” from the way he tells stories to how he “captures childlike perspective in things.”

“He brings that beautiful perspective to this story of young people in the Star Wars universe,” he said.

With that in mind, Chung added that the new Disney+ series would be very different, describing it as something he hadn’t seen before. So, when Watts asked him if he would like to be part of the project when he read the scripts and checked his design, he never thought twice.

“It was a no-brainer for me once I saw what he was working on,” he continued. “And then, also, working with him on that show, and with Jude and all the incredible actors who we have – it was a lot of fun.”

So, with young cast members who Chung described as “incredible and great,” the director hoped Skeleton Crew would “touch families” and make them want to spend much time watching the show. “We were just having fun all the time,” he added.

What is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew about?

Skeleton Crew will follow the story of four kids who will find themselves on an adventure after making a big discovery on their home planet. After getting lost in a galaxy, they will try to find their way home. Details about the series remain scarce, but it will reportedly take place at the same time as Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

Exclusive footage at the Star Wars Celebration in May 2022 also revealed that the series would feature two girls, a boy, and a young alien. These kids live in a forested world, doing things children usually do, like in Amblin-inspired projects. Their adventure begins when they leave their home planet aboard a starship and land on Ortolan, where they meet different creatures, pirates, and Law, who saves them after escaping prison.
