Bloober Team’s acclaimed Silent Hill 2 remake, which debuted as a PlayStation 5 timed exclusive in October 2024, appears poised to break its console exclusivity with an upcoming release on Xbox Series X|S, according to a newly updated rating from the Entertainment Software Rating Board.

The ESRB has quietly amended its official listing for the remake to include certification for “Xbox Series” platforms (via Insider Gaming). This change marks a significant shift, as the game was initially bound by a one-year exclusivity agreement with Sony, a period that officially concluded this month. While the rating itself retains its M for Mature designation—citing intense violence, blood and gore, strong language, and suggestive themes—no further modifications to the content summary have been made.

Despite the ESRB update, neither publisher Konami nor Microsoft has confirmed the port’s existence, let alone provided a release window, pricing details, or information on potential physical editions. Industry observers speculate that the Xbox version could launch digitally through the Microsoft Store and Xbox Game Pass, though no evidence currently supports inclusion in the subscription service at launch. The absence of an official announcement leaves room for a shadow drop, a strategy Konami has employed in the past with smaller Silent Hill-related projects.

The Silent Hill 2 remake revitalized the 2001 survival horror classic with Unreal Engine 5-powered visuals, reimagined combat mechanics, and an expanded narrative that preserved the psychological depth of James Sunderland’s haunting journey through the fog-shrouded town. Critically praised for its atmospheric fidelity and technical achievements, the title surpassed commercial expectations on PlayStation 5, reportedly becoming one of the fastest-selling entries in the franchise’s history.

Building on this momentum, Konami has entrusted Bloober Team with remaking the original Silent Hill, a project announced earlier this year without a targeted release window. The studio’s proven ability to modernize the series’ signature dread while respecting its legacy has fueled optimism among fans for future installments.

The most recent mainline entry, Silent Hill f, arrived last month to largely positive reception. Set in a rural Japanese village warped by grotesque, floral-themed horrors, the game introduced a new protagonist and a narrative unconnected to prior entries. Developed by NeoBards Entertainment with creative input from Siren writer Keiichiro Toyama, Silent Hill f earned praise for its unsettling tone and innovative enemy design, further signaling Konami’s intent to diversify the franchise’s storytelling scope.

Beyond gaming, the Silent Hill universe continues to expand into film. Return to Silent Hill, a new live-action adaptation directed by Christoph Gans—the visionary behind the 2006 cult classic—is slated for release on January 23, 2026. The film closely follows the Silent Hill 2 storyline, focusing on James Sunderland’s descent into the titular town in search of his deceased wife, Mary. Gans has described the project as a “love letter” to the remake, incorporating updated creature designs and practical effects to bridge the gap between the game’s modern aesthetic and cinematic horror.
