Darth Maul remains one of the most visually striking and enduring antagonists in the expansive Star Wars universe. With the debut of the new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, interest in Darth Maul is surging once again. Actor Sam Witwer, who has voiced the character in various Star Wars productions over the years, recently expressed enthusiasm regarding the idea of expanding Maul’s story into new territory.

In a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Witwer shared his growing conviction about the project's storytelling possibilities. "I've become convinced we could do an incredible story, yeah," he stated. "If you asked me, maybe two years ago, I don't know. Yeah, probably, I would have said yes anyway. But now I'm like, 'I know what we can do with him,' for sure."

Witwer brings extensive experience with both the Star Wars franchise and interactive entertainment. He provided voice and motion-capture performance for Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, Galen Marek, in the 2008 action title The Force Unleashed as well as its 2010 follow-up. Over time, he has repeatedly lent his voice to Darth Maul in animated productions and games, taking on prominent parts in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, and the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. For the latter project, original performer Ray Park reprised the role for the live-action sequences while Witwer handled the dialogue.

Years ago, developer Red Fly Studio—responsible for The Force Unleashed 2—was said to be creating a Darth Maul game modeled after the Batman: Arkham Asylum style of gameplay. The title was intended for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U platforms but was ultimately shelved. Concept artwork from the abandoned effort later emerged online, offering glimpses of planned characters and settings that hinted at an atmospheric, combat-focused experience.

Darth Maul made his memorable debut in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace back in 1999, instantly captivating audiences with his double-bladed lightsaber and fierce combat style. Though seemingly defeated at the film’s climax, the character’s survival led to richer explorations of his rage, cunning, and quest for power in subsequent Star Wars stories. Through animated series, Maul evolved from a mere enforcer into a complex figure driven by betrayal and a desire for dominance, often operating outside traditional Sith structures.

The notion of a standalone Darth Maul game taps into long-standing fan interest in deeper dives into villainous perspectives. Such a project could allow players to experience Maul’s tactical brilliance and raw aggression firsthand. Modern game design might incorporate fluid lightsaber duels, Force-enhanced abilities, and branching narratives that mirror the character’s morally gray journey. Potential settings could span iconic locations like the shadowy streets of Mandalore, the harsh landscapes of Dathomir, or the junk-filled depths of Lotho Minor, bringing these environments to life with current technology.

Star Wars video games have delivered everything from epic space battles to intricate role-playing adventures. A title spotlighting Darth Maul could blend high-octane action with thoughtful storytelling, perhaps examining his post-*Clone Wars* activities or alternate paths he might have taken. Witwer’s enthusiasm underscores how much creative ground remains unexplored for the character, suggesting that the right development team could craft an unforgettable experience that expands the Star Wars gaming landscape.

The timing feels particularly fitting as Maul returns to the forefront of Star Wars storytelling. The first two episodes of the new animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord are now streaming on Disney+. The series follows a weekly release pattern with two new episodes premiering each Monday. The next installments arrive on April 13, followed by additional pairs on April 20 and April 27, culminating in the two-part finale on May 4.
