Rogue One Director Cries “So Much Inaccuracy” Over the Making of Star Wars Prequel

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a big hit when it was released in 2016 and quickly dubbed one of the best Star Wars movies ever made. But despite its success, there were reports that the prequel needed extensive reshoots overseen by the Andor creator Tony Gilroy. However, amid the claims, Rogue One director Gareth Edwards cried “so much inaccuracy” over making the film.

After Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Rogue One was seen as a “high point” for the franchise. The film managed to gross over $1 billion at the box office worldwide and even resulted in the making of another critically acclaimed Star Wars project, Andor.

According to multiple reports, Lucasfilm hired Gilroy to join the movie’s team. And with his great influence, he has been considered the film’s ghost director for overseeing the reshoots and post-production. But Edwards has a different story to tell, refusing the claims surrounding the production of Rogue One.

“The stuff that is out there on the internet about what happened on that film — there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing,” he said in an interview with Kim Masters for KCRW‘s The Business.

Sure, Edwards admitted that Gilroy did great work for Rogue One, but the credit wasn’t his alone, stressing they all worked together until the film's end. The filmmaker added there were indeed five weeks of reshoots, but he was there all along amid the claims that he was sidelined, and Gilroy wrote new dialogues and directed additional scenes.

He even revealed that the last scene they filmed for the pickup shoot was Darth Vader’s corridor sequence. “I did all of that stuff,” he continued.

Gareth Edwards Refuses to Talk Badly of Rogue One

Despite the claims about his directorial stint in Rogue One, Edwards refused to talk badly of the movie. Considering how big of a franchise Star Wars is, the 48-year-old doesn’t want to be the guy to complain about it despite getting a big opportunity. It was a dream come true for him, and he was proud of the movie they made.

“What goes into Fight Club stays in Fight Club kind of thing,” he said. “It’s like that. I just want to sound grateful for what happened and not talk negatively about anything.”
