Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the 24-year history of the live-action film series. After its fifth weekend in theaters, the Sony and Constantin Film reboot has earned about $361.2 million worldwide. That puts it comfortably ahead of every Milla Jovovich-led entry and makes it the biggest box office hit of Cregger’s career.
Box Office Mojo now lists Resident Evil at $361,159,411 worldwide, with $148.5 million coming from the US and Canada and $212.7 million from international markets. The film added $22.6 million globally over the October 16 to 18 weekend, including $17.1 million from overseas and $5.5 million domestically.
China is now the film’s biggest market outside North America by a wide margin. Resident Evil opened there on October 5 and has grossed about $56 million so far, including $9.3 million in its second full weekend at the top of the chart. Next on the list are the UK at $18.2 million, Mexico at $12.4 million, Australia at $9.1 million and Japan at $8.5 million.
How Resident Evil Beat Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’s Record
The franchise record had belonged to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which grossed $312.2 million worldwide in 2016 and 2017. Cregger’s film passed it on the October 9 to 11 weekend, when an estimated $40.6 million opening in China pushed its global total to $320.2 million. China has long been a stronghold for the series, as The Final Chapter earned $159.5 million there alone.
The two films reached their totals in very different ways. The Final Chapter made just $26.8 million in the US, which means more than 90% of its money came from overseas. Cregger’s reboot has already earned more than five times that amount domestically, giving it a far more balanced run.
Resident Evil Set Records From Its Opening Weekend
Resident Evil opened in US theaters on September 18 and earned $60.2 million from 3,684 locations in its first three days. That came close to matching the entire $60.1 million domestic run of Resident Evil: Afterlife. The film also earned a B+ CinemaScore and was made on a reported $75 million production budget.
Overseas markets added $48.3 million that weekend for a $108.3 million global opening, the best start the franchise has ever had. The previous high was the $70.6 million worldwide opening of 2012’s Resident Evil: Retribution. The reboot has since held well for a horror release, dipping just 36% domestically in its fifth weekend.
Resident Evil is Now Zach Cregger’s Biggest Movie
Resident Evil is the third feature Cregger has directed solo, and it has now outgrossed his first two combined. His 2022 breakout Barbarian made about $46.2 million worldwide, while 2025’s Weapons finished at $270.1 million. Weapons also earned Amy Madigan the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The reboot also extends Cregger’s working relationship with Austin Abrams, who played the burglar James in Weapons. Cregger said in a September interview that there was “not even a second choice” for the lead once it was time to cast the film. He also said the movie was the only franchise he planned to take on, explaining that he is “not going to go tackle any other franchises.”
How Resident Evil Stacks Up Against Other 2026 Horror Hits
Resident Evil is having a strong run in a remarkable year for horror. On Box Office Mojo’s 2026 worldwide chart, it sits just behind Backrooms at $400.6 million and Curry Barker’s Obsession at $522.8 million. Obsession was made for just $750,000, so Cregger’s film still has a long way to go to match that kind of return.
Resident Evil would need roughly $40 million more to pass Backrooms. Doing so would make it the year’s second-biggest horror release, though Obsession looks out of reach.
Where Resident Evil Ranks Among Video Game Movies
The record is a big one for the franchise, but family-friendly adaptations still dominate the video game movie charts. The Super Mario Bros. Movie leads the pack with $1.36 billion worldwide, followed by this year’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at $1.01 billion and A Minecraft Movie at $960.4 million. An R-rated survival horror film was never likely to reach those numbers.
Where Resident Evil stands out is with critics. The film holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That combination of reviews and box office is rare for a genre that has struggled for decades to win over both audiences and reviewers.
What is Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie about?
Cregger’s film tells an all-new story instead of adapting one of Capcom’s games. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier who agrees to deliver a last-minute package to a hospital in Raccoon City on the night of the outbreak. What follows is a nonstop fight for survival against the Umbrella Corporation’s mutated creations.
Cregger co-wrote the script with Shay Hatten, and Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser lead the supporting cast. The film comes from Columbia Pictures, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions.
When can you watch Resident Evil at home?
Sony hasn’t officially announced a digital or Blu-ray release date for Resident Evil yet. The film has been available to pre-order on digital storefronts, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD since its opening weekend, including a limited-edition 4K SteelBook. Prices start at $24.99 for a digital copy or the DVD.
Once it finishes its run in theaters and on digital, the movie is expected to head to Netflix in the US. That’s because Netflix holds the first streaming window for Sony Pictures’ theatrical releases. Netflix hasn’t announced a date yet.
Will there be a Resident Evil movie sequel?
Sony hasn’t announced a follow-up, and Cregger has said the film was designed to stand on its own. “This movie was designed to be a one-off, so that itch was scratched, yes,” he told ComicBook.com in September. He then added that “there are always ideas percolating” and that he already has “some thoughts of like what could happen… going forward.”
Cregger’s next film is The Flood, a space-set sci-fi thriller for Warner Bros., so any return to Raccoon City would have to wait. But a record-breaking gross on a $75 million budget changes the conversation for Sony and Constantin, who began planning this reboot after Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City underperformed in 2021. With a filmmaker who already has ideas and a franchise record in hand, the studios have every reason to make the case for another night in Raccoon City.
