Resident Evil 2 Remake Gets Playable Local Co-Op

Raccoon City was built to be survived alone — Resident Evil 2 just got a second player anyway.

Raccoon City no longer has to be survived alone. A fan-made PC mod has turned Capcom's 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake into a genuine two-player game, adding a fully controllable second character to a campaign that was designed from the ground up to isolate its heroes.

The remake, released on January 25, 2019, stars Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield in separate but intertwining campaigns. Both journeys were built as strictly single-player adventures, with the loneliness treated as a feature rather than a limitation — every dark hallway of the Raccoon City Police Department was meant to be walked without backup. The mod rewrites that premise entirely.

The Local Couch Co-op mod, previously known as HUNK'y Friend, created by Nexus Mods creator Shopcreeper01, does far more than attach an NPC follower to the main character. Player 2 can step in as HUNK or one of several other characters, each with separate aiming, inventory, weapons, pickups, HUD elements, and a flashlight. Both players can be attacked, trade supplies, and revive each other after being downed — and if both characters fall, the run ends for everyone.

The mod supports shared-screen and split-screen play, and it even includes an AI companion mode for solo players who want the company without a second controller. An experimental mode inspired by Pragmata splits the duties differently still, with one player handling movement while the other handles aiming and shooting. The whole package requires the Steam PC version of the game and REFramework to run.

A second gun inevitably changes how Resident Evil 2 feels. The remake built its tension on forcing Leon or Claire to make uncomfortable calls alone — conserving ammunition, squeezing past a zombie, or hearing Mr. X's footsteps while already low on health. Backup makes some encounters easier, but another player is also another person who can get grabbed, burn through supplies, or go down at the worst possible moment. Fittingly, the project began as a companion concept meant to help a spouse who found frightening games hard to face alone, before growing into full co-op.

Co-op has a long history in the series, from the Outbreak games' four-player escapes from Raccoon City to Resident Evil 5, which built its entire campaign around Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar working as a pair, and later Revelations 2 and its complementary partner abilities. What makes this mod notable is where it applies that formula: modern Resident Evil remakes have leaned hard into slower, solitary survival horror, so dropping a second player into Resident Evil 2 feels like importing Resident Evil 5's defining concept into one of Capcom's most deliberately claustrophobic games.

No Resident Evil 5 remake has been officially announced, and Capcom has given no indication that official co-op is coming to the Resident Evil 2 remake. For now, PC players do not have to wait for Capcom's next cooperative experiment to find out how modern Resident Evil feels with a friend.
