Between the first two seasons of Re:Zero, there was a four-year hiatus, with the first season debuting on April 4, 2016, while the second season was split into two cours, with the first half airing from July 8 to September 30, 2020 and the second half airing from January 6 to March 24, 2021.

Re:Zero Season 3 Trailer

During the aforementioned announcement at AnimeJapan 2023, Kadokawa also shared a first look at Re:Zero Season 3 through a two-minute teaser trailer.

Half of the teaser's runtime is dedicated to the flight of a bird through the urban landscapes, before finally giving us quick glimpses of Subaru, Ram, Emilia, and other characters. It looks like the heroes are facing a huge thread in the midst of a raging storm.

Since the second season of Re:Zero ended with Arc 4: The Everlasting Contract, the next season will begin adapting Arc 5: The Stars that Engrave History.

In Arc 5 of the novel, Anastasia Hoshin will extend invitations to the Emilia, Priscilla, Crusch, and Felt Camps to convene in the Watergate City of Priestella. Regrettably, shortly after their arrival, the Witch Cult is poised to infiltrate the city and establish dominion over it. Consequently, Natsuki Subaru will be compelled to rally all five camps together in order to vanquish the nefarious Cultists and emancipate the city.

In the promotional trailer, it's clear that the five camps are set to play an important role in the next arc. The trailer shows Subaru standing alongside Emilia, Garfiel, Beatrice, and Otto as they stare the four Witch Cult members who look down on them from the sky.

In July 2023, the official website of the anime shared a description that sets the scene for the upcoming season, with the translation from the site that reads:

"A year has passed since the battle against the Great Rabbit, as well as repelling the fierce assault of Elsa's group that saw the liberation of the Sanctuary that Beatrice was contracted to. Emilia's Camp has been working together for the King's Selection. But while Natsuki Subaru has spent his days having fun, a single letter from a messenger signals the end of the peace."

A new visual was also released an official art for Re:Zero Season 3 along with the ominous preface.

"It's a letter from one of the King's Selection candidates, Anastasia, inviting Emilia to one of Lugunica's Five Major Cities — the floodgate city of Pristella. Accepting the invitation, all manners of reunions awaited Subaru's party heading to Pristella. Some unexpected, some unintentional, and some to come in the future. Evil intentions stir beneath the surface; a crisis of unprecedented levels lurks around the corner. The boy once again stands up to fate."
