Overwatch's New Support Hero Is a Vampire Who Steals Life — and Commands an Army of Bats

Overwatch just got its most sinister healer yet. Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support hero who siphons lifeforce from enemies to keep his own team alive, headlines Season 5: A Grim Doctrine, which goes live today — and he's bringing an army of mechanical bat drones with him.

Blizzard detailed everything coming in the season in an official blog post published October 5, covering Doctrine's full ability kit, a brand-new Escort map, one of the biggest hero reworks in the game's history, a Halloween event lineup, and an anime collaboration. Season 5 also marks the final chapter of the Reign of Talon story arc that has been building for years.

Doctrine's kit is built entirely around manipulating lifeforce on both sides of a fight. His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies from mid to long range, while his bat-like drones grant teammates healing and increased attack speed. His Infuse ability supercharges whichever ability he uses next — Blizzard's gameplay trailer shows it granting free flight when paired with his Shrouded Momentum dash, or piercing damage on his next Eternal Scepter attack.

His Ultimate, Deliverance, is the showstopper: it redistributes life across the battlefield, granting allies Overhealth while capping the maximum health of enemies. As Blizzard's blog puts it, even lifeforce is negotiable if you ask the right vampire.

Doctrine didn't arrive by accident, either. He's a figure from Doomfist's bloodied past, a cyberneticist whose technology kept himself and his brother alive — and ultimately condemned him to Grímsvötn, a volcanic prison where years without his drones took their toll. Then Doomfist broke him out, and some history refuses to stay buried.

That prison break is now a playable battleground. Watchpoint: Grímsvötn is the first new Escort map in years, set in an Icelandic volcanic fissure. Once an Overwatch watchpoint and later controlled by Helix, the prison housed some of the world's most dangerous criminals — including Doomfist himself. Now that Talon has seized control, players will push the payload straight through the scene of Doctrine's escape.

Doctrine isn't the only support shaking up the roster. In what Blizzard calls one of the biggest changes ever made to an existing hero, Sombra is moving from Damage to Support as a new Support Tactician. Her Hotfix ability heals a targeted ally after a brief cast and can be used while Invisible without breaking stealth. Her Cyberspace ability creates a zone that heals allies while inflicting a new Weaken status on enemies, cutting their damage and healing effectiveness.

Roadhog is getting a major rework too. His Scrap Gun now fires two bursts per volley with a stronger center projectile, and his new Trash Compactor ability swallows incoming enemy projectiles, then fires back an explosive shot whose damage scales with how much punishment it absorbed.

Halloween brings Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, running October 6 through November 2. Players enter as a random hero and come back from every death with random new powers, stacking strange combinations as the match goes on. Completing challenges earns Offerings, which players pledge to vote Ashe, Moira, or Winston into the mode next — with the roster growing to 20 playable heroes by the final week.

The season also features the Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collaboration with Solo Leveling, running October 6–19. Five heroes get Hunter and Shadow Soldier skins: Genji as Sung Jinwoo, Reaper as Igris, Anran as Cha Hae-In, Reinhardt as Iron, and Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In.

On the cosmetics front, Season 5 adds the Mythic Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang hero skin — complete with a celestial dragon companion and four customization levels ending in full ascension effects — and Treblemaker, Lúcio's first Mythic weapon skin, which hides a tiny dancing frog inside the gun that comes alive to the beat. Unvaulted Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15 also return, letting players pick up where they left off on old passes while progressing the current one at the same time. A Tech Witches collection arrives October 9–26, and Team Drives return October 29 through November 1.
