One Piece Dethroned by a Controversial Comedy Special as Netflix's No. 1 TV Show

This is probably bad news for One Piece's future on Netflix.

After just over a week, One Piece is no longer Netflix’s No. 1 TV show in the US, thanks to this controversial comedy special. The live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga has done the impossible, catching the interest of new and longtime fans alike. However, it is now dethroned by the comedy special Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs.

Netflix released One Piece on August 31. Since then, the show quickly dominated the streamer, taking the first spot of its top 10 TV shows worldwide. It even breaks and makes new records held by the service’s other major titles, like Stranger Things and Wednesday. However, things have changed so quickly with the release of Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs.

The current Top 10 TV shows in the US are now dominated by Shane Gillis’ new special, moving One Piece to the No. 2 spot. The show in question sees the return of the controversial stand-up comedian in doing comedy specials after the 2021’s Shane Gillis: Live in Austin on YouTube.

So, why is he notorious? The 35-year-old was hired to be a Saturday Night Live cast member in 2019, only to be fired before officially joining the show due to his racial slur and controversial remarks in a resurfaced video.

And true to his image, he’s once again the talk of the town for his joke about Australia, claiming the Australians “do nothing” and have “zero exports” that make the Aussies furious. These controversies may have sparked the viewers’ interest, and they ended up watching Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs, leaving One Piece behind.

Why One Piece is quickly dethroned?

Though there’s no definite explanation for why Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs has quickly dethroned One Piece, one possible answer is that fans in the United States may have binged-watch its eight episodes in one go and moved on to watch other shows. Between August 31 and September 3, the series recorded 140 million viewing hours.

Though this is good news, considering One Piece’s huge budget, reportedly $17.27 million per episode, it needs to perform better in viewing hours to prove its fame and worth. It will also help to get the series renewed for a second season.

However, since Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs only runs for over 50 minutes, there’s a possibility that One Piece will reclaim the top spot. If it happens, there’s a good chance this series will continue, especially the positive reception it has received.
