Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats are about to start their journey to the Grand Line again as a One Piece anime remake is about to make its way on Netflix. The production of the new anime series, officially titled The One Piece, was announced at the recent Jump Festa 2024 and would be produced by Wit Studio, which is also behind Spy x Family and Attack on Titan Seasons 1-3.

According to Tudum, The One Piece is a collaboration project by Wit Studio, Shueisha, Fuji Television Network, and Toei Animation Co. It aims to give viewers a “fresh yet familiar experience” using cutting-edge visual technology, reimagining Luffy’s adventures in the East Blue Saga.

Hence, fans are about to see a far different One Piece anime with a new and modern look. The anime’s production team said (via the franchise’s official website) that they wanted to explore the expressions that could only be done now and show Luffy’s adventures with a “nostalgic yet new feel.”

However, they added that it may take a while before this new anime finally comes to fruition, as it’s a long project that will take even more time to complete. That said, they’re now ready to work with Wit Studio and Netflix to bring The One Piece to every fan around the world soon.

Alternatively, Wit Studio president Takeshi Wada said they’re beyond humble to do the One Piece remake. With this new challenge, they aim to “electrify people” worldwide by carefully depicting the challenges, dreams, friendships, and hopes created by Eiichiro Oda himself. However, for them to do so, the studio is asking for the help of all creators to join them in this project.

What is The One Piece about?

The One Piece will still be based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga of the same name. It will follow the story of Monkey D. Luffy, an aspiring pirate who will build his own crew called the Straw Hats and will go on a journey to find the mysterious treasure called One Piece. But compared to other pirates, Luffy is special as he has the most stretchable limbs that can be likened to rubber. His unique abilities will help him face the most dangerous villains and rivals he and his friends will meet along the way.

You can read the synopsis below:

The One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy, an aspiring pirate who sets sail with his Straw Hats crew in search of the mysterious One Piece treasure. Luffy isn’t just like any pirate, however. With limbs that stretch like rubber, his unique skills help him take on the dangerous villains and rivals he and his gang encounter at sea.

Starting in 1997, the manga has spawned a huge media franchise. As of November 2023, it already has 107 tankobon volumes and 523.2 million copies in circulation as of December 2023, making it the best-selling manga in history and the best-selling comic series printed in the book volume. It was then adapted into a festival film by Production I.G and an anime series by Toei Animation, premiering in 1999. It is now on its 20th season with 1,088 episodes. It also has 13 animated feature films, OVA, 13 TV specials, and a live-action adaptation by Netflix, releasing in August 2023.
