Previous Ghost in the Shell Anime Adaptations
Ghost in the Shell is based on the Japanese cyberpunk manga series by Shirow Masamune. The manga, first serialized in 1989, was published as its own tankōbon volumes by Kodansha. Set in mid-21st century Japan, the story centers on the fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization Public Security Section 9, led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically enhanced agent in a futuristic society where consciousness and technology intertwine.
The first anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell is the Mamoru Oshii-directed 1995 film, and it was followed by Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2004), the acclaimed Stand Alone Complex TV series (2002–2005) and its seuqel film Solid State Society. The Ghost in the Shell: Arise reboot series ran from 2013 to 2015, and the latest one is Kōkaku Kidōtai SAC_2045 Saigo no Ningen (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 The Last Human), the compilation film for the Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 Season 2 TV anime. The film was released in November 2023.
The production committee for the series consists of Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, Science SARU, and Production I.G.
