Fans patiently await Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece Season 2. After a successful first season, topping the streamer’s Top 10 TV shows, and a swift second-season renewal, all eyes are now on Luffy and the Straw Hats’ return to the small screen. Now, it looks like the wait will be soon over as Sanji actor Taz Skylar teased the second season production, which is about to begin in no time.
One Piece Season 2 has been in the works since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes finally ended last year. That said, in an interview with Digital Spy for his new movie Gassed Up, Skylar revealed that the cast and crew are about to return to South Africa to start filming.
“I know they’re working on it,” he said. “I know we have general dates so as to when we are going back to South Africa, which isn’t too long from now.”
Aside from the series’ filming, he also teased what’s to come in the second season, saying the stories are “really cool.” He revealed that he loves how Netflix adapts the second saga, the Arabasta Saga, of Eiichiro’s manga with the same title on which One Piece Season 2 is based.
“I love the way that they’re adapting it; I love what they’re doing with each one of our characters,” he continued.
And with the bond that they have formed when doing the first season, Skylar added that everyone is excited to get back together after having a “great experience” and making “so many great friends.” He also confessed that they all love South Africa and can’t wait to be in that country again “this year.”
For starters, as soon as the WGA strike ended in September 2023, Netflix’s official One Piece page on X shared a photo of the start of the new season’s production with its creative team. “Meet the writers room for season 2,” the caption read. “We can’t wait to share what adventures we have in store.”
What to Expect from One Piece Season 2?
Netflix is expected to adapt the Arabasta Saga for One Piece Season 2. After Luffy and the Straw Hats’ adventure in East Blue, they’re about to make their way to Loguetown for resupply before they sail to the Grand Line. However, with the many enemies the crew has to face, they will meet the new series’ antagonist, Smoker, the town's captain.
In addition, the second season may also feature the Drum Island Arc, where Luffy and his fellow pirates will meet Tony Tony Chopper. To recall, when Oda-san announced the second-season renewal, he teased that the group needed a doctor and drew a visual of Chopper. For the live-action-only fans, the Straw Hats will travel to Drum Island to find a doctor after Nami catches a mysterious disease and will meet the talking reindeer, also known as Cotton Candy Lover Chopper.
So far, Netflix has yet to announce when One Piece Season 2 will be released. However, there are theories that it may hit the small screens either in late 2024 or early 2025. Whatever the case is, fans will surely be waiting for the Straw Hats’ return, hoping the second iteration will be as good, if not better, than the first season.
