Netflix is probably gearing up for the live-action adaptation of One Piece Season 2. Though details about the new season’s production remain scarce, the filming may soon begin as the writers’ and actors’ strikes finally end. In fact, one of its main stars, Mackenyu, is now teasing the return of his fan-favorite character, Roronoa Zoro.
In his latest appearance at Tokyo Comic Con 2023, Makenyu confirmed he would be part of One Piece Season 2. “Next year, I’m playing Zoro again,” he said, seemingly hinting that the new season’s production might begin in 2024.
Though fans had already seen the best of the Straw Hat Pirates’ great swordsman, the Japanese actor promised that he would play an “even cooler and stronger” Zoro. He even revealed that part of his resolution for the coming new year is to do his best for his role and asked everyone to look forward to it.
One Piece Season 2 Production Update
After initial reports revealed that the scripts for One Piece Season 2 were done, the show’s co-creator Matt Owens cleared to Deadline that it hadn’t been completed yet. Though the writers' room began before the strike started, the works didn’t go much further than planning the new season and plotting out a couple of outlines.
“But that’s as far as we got,” he said, admitting that completing the scripts would take some time.
In the same interview, he revealed he talked to the series creator, Eiichiro Oda, about their plans for the second season and mapped out some outlines. Thankfully, they came up with a solid plan after discussing their ideas and what he wanted to include in the series to ensure they aligned with the mangaka’s objectives.
From there, Owens confirmed that he and the series’ writers are back in the writing process, and the room is already up and running. As they’re now working on the scripts, they will next put their focus on the design, scheduling, and pre-production, among other things.
What to expect from One Piece Season 2
One Piece Season 2 is expected to adapt the second saga, Arabasta Saga, of Eiichiro Oda’s manga of the same name, on which the live-action is based. Here, Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats will stop in Loguetown, where they’re about to meet the new antagonist, Smoker, to get their supplies before they continue their adventure to the Grand Line.
As part of the second saga, the new season may also adapt the Drum Island Arc, where Luffy will meet its new member, Tony Tony Chopper. After Nami gets ill with a mysterious disease, they travel to Drum Island to look for a doctor and encounter the talking reindeer.
With the first season's success, many are now excited to see One Piece Season 2. Hopefully, this will still be as good as the first saga.
