Netflix has added a new anime adaptation to its growing arsenal. This time, it’s about to introduce a cult classic Capcom video game series, Onimusha, to the TV world. The streamer has now unveiled major details about its new offering, from a new trailer to the official release date and more.

Onimusha is originally an action-adventure video game series developed and published by Capcom. It features historical figures who shaped Japan’s history as they retell their stories using supernatural elements. The game highlights third-person hack-and-slash combat and puzzle elements. Its success has made it the video game company’s ninth best-selling franchise, while Netflix’s anime adaptation was announced in September 2022.

The streaming giant has recently released a new trailer for Onimusha. The almost three-minute preview breathes new life into the legendary game as it introduces the main character, Miyamoto Musashi. At the same time, Måneskin’s The Loneliest surprisingly plays in the background as Musashi prepares for a great battle.

“Miyamoto Mushashi-dono, I will entrust it to you, believing in your abilities,” the narrator says, as translated into English in the subtitle. “However, I request that you strictly adhere to the 33-day deadline.”

From there, the town’s problems are revealed, with one woman complaining her village was destroyed. The villagers are then seen fighting a horde of zombies as Musashi assures a child he won’t let them touch her.

What is Netflix’s Onimusha anime about?

According to Netflix, its anime adaptation of Onimusha mostly focuses on Musashi, modeled after the late Japanese screen icon Toshiro Mifune. The series is set in the early Edo Period when Japan was on its way toward peace, and warfare was about to end. Here, an aging Musashi goes on a covert mission to face the demons using the mythical Oni Gauntlet.

Here’s what the service has to say about it:

What makes Onimusha truly groundbreaking is its fusion of cutting-edge 3D CGI character animations with beautifully hand-drawn backgrounds. This amalgamation of traditional and modern animation techniques promises to bring a fresh, immersive experience to both long-time fans and newcomers alike.
