After being off the screen since June, Star Trek: Prodigy has found a new streaming home after Paramount’s cancellation. Netflix has heard the fans’ cry and saved the animated series after a petition started. The streamer has now announced when Prodigy will be released, along with its “brand new” second season.

Star Trek: Prodigy originally aired on Paramount+ and Nickelodeon in 2021. However, following the second season renewal, Paramount announced the show’s cancellation and even removed the entire first season from its streaming service. Luckily, after four months of agony, with fans worrying that there’s no chance for the series to return, it’s now moving to Netflix.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the streamer officially added the show to its growing arsenal. “Star Trek: Prodigy is coming to Netflix!” its caption reads. It then revealed that the first season would be released later this year, followed by the second season in 2024.

Why did Paramount+ cancel Star Trek: Prodigy?

Though Paramount+ didn’t specify why it canceled Star Trek: Prodigy, it reportedly had something to do with the streamers’ latest move to take advantage of tax write-offs. It wasn’t the only show canceled after the service went on a cancellation spree. The Game, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies and Queen of the Universe were also canceled and removed from its library.

A spokesperson said these shows had completed their runs and wouldn’t be returning to the platform. However, a source told Variety that the removals were “data-driven.” Though the cancellation came amid the second season renewal, its post-production would still be completed, making CBS Studios, which produced Star Trek: Prodigy, free to shop it to other outlets. And by the looks of it, it has already crafted a deal with Netflix.
