Multiple Gaming Stores Decline to Carry GTA 6 "Physical" Copies Without a Disc

Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 went live on Thursday, generating significant excitement among players eager for the next chapter in the iconic series. However, the reveal that initial physical editions would ship as a download code in a box rather than with a playable disc has created immediate friction with some retailers. This approach has led several stores to refuse stocking the title at launch, raising questions about the evolving nature of game distribution.

As Dexerto pointed out, two retailers have publicly stated they will not sell the highly anticipated open-world game due to its disc-less “physical” format. This decision stems from long-standing policies prioritizing genuine physical media over boxed codes. The move highlights tensions between traditional retail practices and modern publishing strategies employed by major developers like Rockstar Games.

Loot Box Gaming, an independent U.S. store, echoed strong support for preserving physical games. “When we started LBG, it was out of a love for our favorite form of media, gaming, as-well [sic] as the preservation of said media,” said the post. “If a product can’t honor the people who pay their hard earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers whom we value above anything else.” The retailer indicated it would stock Grand Theft Auto 6 if future versions include an actual disc.

Video Games Plus, a veteran Canadian independent retailer, has similarly declined to carry the initial release. Operating for nearly 40 years with a focus on tangible ownership, the store maintains strict guidelines against selling download-only physical products. This stance aligns with their mission to champion physical media in an increasingly digital landscape.

The company explained its position in a detailed social media announcement. “For nearly 40 years, VGP has been committed to supporting physical media and preserving the value of physical game ownership,” read the post. “As part of that commitment, our company policy is that we do not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code.” Video Games Plus confirmed it would welcome copies featuring a disc if they become available down the line.

While these independent shops are taking a stand, major retailers continue supporting the launch. Larger chains such as Best Buy, GameStop, and Target have active pre-orders available for Grand Theft Auto 6, showing that the disc controversy has not halted availability across the broader market. The divide between indie specialists and big-box stores could influence how collectors seek out physical editions in the future.

This situation underscores broader industry shifts away from traditional discs toward digital delivery methods. Publishers often cite reduced manufacturing costs, streamlined distribution, and better protection against early leaks as key motivations. For many dedicated fans and retailers, however, the absence of a disc diminishes the appeal and collectibility of a premium boxed product.
