Despite the successful two seasons, receiving positive reviews and critical acclaim, Netflix has canceled Mindhunter Season 3, leaving viewers upset that the fan-favorite psychological crime thriller has come to an end. However, like many of its fans, one of the series stars, Holt McCallany, remains hopeful that the show will return, and Season 3 may still happen.

In an interview with Awards Daily, McCallany revealed that Mindhunter Season 3 might still be in the works. Though he admitted that it would be “unlikely,” he teased that the series’ executive producer, David Fincher, had thought about returning the series, renewing the hopes for the show to continue.

“I’ve heard that David’s thought about it,” he said.

However, the actor said he wasn’t confirming that the show would return. But clearing that if it does, he would be open to reprising his role as special agent Bill Tench. “I’m coming back with it,” he added.

McCallany revealed that he would depend on what Fincher wanted to do. But though it might not happen, as it had been over three years since the second season was released, hearing that Fincher was thinking about it was a “hopeful sign” for him.

Why did Netflix cancel Mindhunter Season 3?

Mindhunter Seasons 1 and 2 received universal acclaim after their release in 2017 and 2019, respectively. The first season received 96% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season got 99%. Hence, the cancellation was a surprise to many.

Netflix initially announced in 2020 that the potential Mindhunter Season 3 was put on an indefinite hold after Fincher decided to pursue other projects and might “revisit” the series in the future. However, in February 2023, the film director confirmed that the streamer had officially canceled the show.

In an interview with Forbes, Fincher revealed that he was "very proud" of the series’ first two seasons but admitted that it was costly to make. Hence, as Netflix found that it didn’t attract enough audience to justify its big “investment,” it led to the cancellation. Anyhow, Fincher still gave the service the credit for taking the risk and getting the show off the ground.

“The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways,” he said.
