The Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 laid out a noticeably different release strategy for the years ahead. No MCU film will arrive in theaters between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The studio has deliberately cleared that window so its two largest projects can receive full attention without competition from other titles on the calendar.
Kevin Feige addressed the empty stretch in an interview with Empire after the panel. He framed the decision as part of a broader recalibration designed to protect the franchise’s biggest films. The studio is stepping back from the denser schedule that defined recent years in order to keep production focused.
“A lot of it is a strategy we’ve talked about for a while, of focusing on quality,” he told the outlet. “We always try to focus on quality, but when quantity is so much, you get spread thin. We didn’t want to be spread thin, and the Avengers is as important as it comes.” Feige added that Secret Wars in particular functions as a major setup for whatever comes next, which made landing both Avengers movies the clear priority.
That quality-first approach directly shapes the titles already locked for 2028. After Secret Wars reshapes the landscape, Marvel will move into Black Panther 3 with David Jonsson stepping into a central role and the Ghost Rider film headlined by Ryan Gosling. Both projects are being held until after the Avengers events so they can be developed with the concentrated resources Feige described.
Gosling brought his own specific vision for the Spirit of Vengeance to the table, sharing it first with director Shawn Levy during their work on another project. The pair then presented the idea to Marvel, leading to the formal announcement that the character will receive a standalone feature in 2028. Levy’s involvement continues the creative partnership that previously delivered Deadpool & Wolverine.
Black Panther 3 continues under Ryan Coogler’s direction and will introduce David Jonsson as the new Black Panther, taking on the mantle in the years following Secret Wars. The film is positioned as a traditional heavy-hitter within the post-*Secret Wars* MCU while still reflecting the studio’s renewed emphasis on giving major projects the time and focus they need.
Feige noted that the two 2028 titles revealed so far—*Ghost Rider* and Black Panther 3—are only the beginning of what the studio is preparing for that year. The gap between the Avengers films is intended to create the breathing room required to set those later releases up properly. By refusing to stretch resources across too many simultaneous productions, Marvel is betting that fewer, stronger films will better serve the long-term health of the franchise.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026, as the first of the two back-to-back event films that now define Marvel’s immediate priority. Avengers: Secret Wars arrives on December 17, 2027, closing the Multiverse Saga chapter and opening the door to the quality-focused slate that follows.
