After almost six years, fans will again see Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) back on the small screen in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. As this will be the first time that he will have his own TV series after Netflix’s Daredevil, which ran for three seasons from 2015 to 2018, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum can’t help but liken the show to the hit animated series X-Men ‘97.
On the Wednesday episode of The Official Marvel Podcast, Winderbaum talked about Daredevil: Born Again and how it was literally “born again” for Marvel Studios. The series is the revival of the Daredevil franchise and a sequel to the Netflix series of the same title, which was still under Marvel Television then. As it has the same theme as X-Men ‘97, which serves as the revival of the 1990s’ X-Men: The Animated Series, Winderbaum sees the similarities between the two shows.
“Daredevil is incredible. It's similar in some ways to X-Men '97 because it's reviving something that the fans love,” he said. “But it's taking it in a new direction.”
Six years after fans last saw Daredevil in the Netflix series, Winderbaum revealed that these characters have already changed and matured. The universe is also different than it was. Hence, fans will see a different Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk / Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) this time.
“Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we've never seen before,” he explained. “It's no longer enough to try to murder each other. There's a whole game of politics at play.”
Back in January, D’Onofrio told The Hollywood Reporter that Daredevil: Born Again would be a continuation of Netflix’s Daredevil after a creative overhaul. The show would feature the history and outcome of the stories introduced in the original show’s three seasons. This is the same thing X-Men ‘97 has done after X-Men: The Animated Series, continuing the story of the X-Men after the supposed death of their leader, Charles Xavier / Professor X.
