Marvel Comics recently made some major announcements at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con 2023, and one of the most interesting reveals was announced on Friday, during the MARVEL: Heroes, Hulks, and Super-Soldiers panel at the event. During that panel, Marvel Comics announced the new character who will be taking the role of The Punisher.

Who is Marvel's new Punisher?

That new character is a retired S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent named Joe Garrison, and his story will be featured in the new Punisher series, written by David Pepose (Moon Knight: City of the Dead, Savage Avengers) and illustrated by Dave Wachter (X-Men Legends, Planet of the Apes), who's known for his noir-inspired and gritty art style. Covers will be illustrated by Rod Reis.

What is the plot of Marvel's new Punisher series?

In this action-packed new The Punisher series, Frank Castle has disappeared, but evil will always need to be punished. With all-new threats rising to claim innocent victims, criminals will need to beware of a dangerous vigilante hunting them from the shadows. The new Punisher is a retired S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent Joe Garrison. But what brings him back into action? What put him on his path of vengeance? And when the smoke clears, will Joe Garrison even make it out alive?

“The man might be different, but the punishment remains the same,” said series writer David Pepose. “I wanted to introduce the Danny Ketch to Frank’s Johnny Blaze.”

Pepose added, “I asked myself ‘How do we build a bigger table? And how do we invite as many readers as possible?’ For existing fans of the Punisher and for new fans, this is a story that’s not going to sacrifice any of the attitude, any of the action, and we are not letting the pedal off the metal.”

This is surely going to be one of the most action-packed titles Marvel Comics will release this year, and it's going to be dark and gritty.

Marvel's Punisher #1 is set to hit shelves wherever comic books are sold starting on November 8.
