Marvel's Kevin Feige Says Deadpool & Wolverine is "The Most Wholesome R-Rated Film"

Kevin Feige teased that Deadpool & Wolverine would be much more emotional than the first two Deadpool films, and fans are about to see how "heartfelt" it is.

Marvel Studios has been known for its family-friendly movies until Deadpool & Wolverine changed everything. The threequel has become its first R-rated film for its “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references.” But despite its R rating, the studio’s president, Kevin Feige, finds Deadpool 3 “the most wholesome R-rated film.”

In an interview with Deadline, Feige revealed that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been edgy in the past when asked if Deadpool & Wolverine would start an edgier era of the franchise. The Marvel boss is confident that they span “all types of genre and tone,” adding that the threequel only got attention for being Marvel Studios’ first R-rated movie, though it’s already the third Deadpool film that received an R rating.

“We wanted to stay true to what Ryan has built over those last couple of movies, and we weren’t going to undo that,” he said

Sure, the trailers and press tours prove that the movie is R-rated, with the addition of expletives and bloody scenes. However, the film is “incredibly emotional” for Feige, finding it the most wholesome R-rated film.

“I keep calling it the most wholesome R-rated film that anybody can ever see,” he continued. “It really is a celebration of friendship and family and of found family.”

Though Feige doesn’t want to repeat himself, among the R-rated films that receive attention for their raunchiness, he said fans will see how “heartfelt” Deadpool & Wolverine is when it finally hits the big screen. He even described it as much more emotional than the first two Deadpool movies.

“That’s what I’m really excited about, once people get past the ‘F’ words and the R-rating, to see how sweet it is,” he continued.

Kevin Feige Discusses What Will Keep the Hype Up after Deadpool & Wolverine

Feige also discussed the hype surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine. As this is believed to be a renaissance for superhero movies amid superhero fatigue, the producer was asked how they could keep this fever up and what they could do to keep the moviegoers re-engaged.

I’ve never been a big believer in superhero being a genre in and of itself. We made films that are based in graphic narrative format originally, but we make different types of movies, and I think the answer to that question is the same answer to movies in general: making engaging, entertaining films that have to be experienced in a theater with a crowd and is worth people getting into their cars and making the trip.

He added that Hollywood must continuously produce films that will stand above all and offer entertainment that no one can get elsewhere. He even cited Inside Out 2 as an example, reminding viewers of the entertainment they can get when they watch it in theaters, which also excites fans to see Deadpool & Wolverine on the big screen.

“I think the experience that it’s going to give to people and hopefully encourage people to go see it again and again, that’s our job,” he continued. “That’s our job at Marvel, that’s our job as the 100-year-old Hollywood industry — to remind people that we have the best storytellers and can provide the best entertainment in the world.”

Feige promised they would continuously do projects that would “engage, excite, and grab onto the imagination and psyche” of the audience, which they all ever wanted and tried to do. He believed they had to keep evolving and expanding in terms of how they could do that.
