Marvel Studios is all set to introduce a total of three of their projects in the coming year, i.e., 2024. While the studio’s movie slate has been cut down to only Deadpool 3 for the entire year of 2024, this film is going to be joined by a pair of series releasing on Disney+.
On Monday, Marvel Studios Animation announced that both Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men ‘97 will launch in 2024. Not only this, but a previously unannounced animated show titled Eyes of Wakanda will also be released alongside these two titles.
From what we know, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a brand-new name for the Marvel series that was initially announced as Spider-Man: Freshman Year. Unfortunately, not a lot of information was revealed about both Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men ‘97 since their initial announcements took place more than two years ago.
When it comes to X-Men '97, both Marvel and Disney+ have described the show as follows, "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all." Cyclops, Rogue, Morph, Wolverine, Cable, Gambit, Jean Grey, Forge, Beast, and Bishop are set to return in the series along with Nightcrawler and Sunspot.
X-Men ‘97 follows the story of Magneto as he leads the X-Men in the absence of Professor Xavier. The role of the main villain will be played by Mister Sinister in the upcoming much-anticipated series. Beau DeMayo, the head writer of X-Men ‘97, previously stated, "Sinister is back in a big way. He is going to be holding the X-Men's fate in the fire and telling humanity...to face the future."
What's there to know about Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man?
Unfortunately, not a lot is known about the story of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, but we do know that it’ll be set in Peter Parker’s very first year of High School, which was the start of his Spider-Man journey. Before the web-slinger joined the Avengers, he was just your average friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, who kept his part of the city safe.
The series will also include other heroes, such as Daredevil and Doctor Strange while taking its visual design cues from the popular Silver Age Spider-Man comic books. However, in this particular series, fans can expect Peter Parker to go up against some iconic villains, including Chameleon and Doctor Octopus, with Norman Osborn taking on a mentor role.
When asked about the show Jeff Trammell, the showrunner and a long-time Spider-Man fan, said, “It’s so cool to be doing this show and being one of the people they trust to go forward. Giving someone Spider-Man and saying ‘Go’ is not like a small task. So there’s a lot of trust that was put in me and I definitely want to make sure I honor that trust and I take the character to new heights in a way that Marvel is going to get behind and be excited about.”
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and X-Men '97 are set to come out on Disney+ in 2024, but the exact release date hasn't been announced yet.
