If there's one thing that people have been discussing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would be Scarlet Witch's vague ending in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but that's about to change. The fate of Wanda Maximoff has been officially confirmed, bringing both clarity and disappointment to hopeful fans after the dramatic conclusion of the MCU sequel.

A new book, titled Marvel Studios' The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline, appears to provide a conclusive resolution to the Scarlet Witch's storyline following her showdown at Mount Wundagore (via X). The passage in the book reads, "[Wanda] destroys Wundagore – and collapses it upon herself – ending two great threats to all of the Multiverse."

It's a rather disappointing confirmation considering that people had big hopes for Scarlet Witch. On the other hand, it's a fitting conclusion for the character who has been through so much since she was first introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

What happened in Doctor Strange 2?

In the movie, Wanda, played by Elizabeth Olsen, battled Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wong (Benedict Wong), and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) before being transported to Earth-838. There, she encounters her sons, Billy and Tommy, who are terrified of her and yearn for their real mother.

The moment serves as a reality check for Wanda, making her realize the errors of her actions. As a result, she returns to Wundagore to bring it down and eliminate every copy of the Darkhold in the multiverse. Her self-sacrifice is confirmed in the book, giving her storyline a definite ending.

Will Scarlet Witch still return to the MCU?

While Wanda's fate may have appeared clear by the end of the film, the nature of Marvel's multiverses often leaves room for characters to return. Recent examples include Cobie Smulders teasing her return as Agent Maria Hill in The Marvels, despite her character's apparent demise at the hands of Gravik the Skrull in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. In the ever-expansive Marvel Universe, the line between life and death can be more malleable than it first seems.

But how can the MCU bring back Scarlet Witch? As Doctor Strange 2 implied, there are several Variants all around the multiverse and we even saw a Wanda Maximoff Variant in the film. Perhaps a future project will introduce a Scarlet Witch Variant but this has not yet been officially confirmed. Make sure to check this page for MCU updates.
