Bungie, the studio developing the upcoming extraction shooter Marathon, has shared encouraging insights from the recent Server Slam test event. With the game's launch set for March 5, 2026, the developer highlighted how participants are increasingly enjoying the experience as they advance through its systems.

In their latest update, Bungie pointed to notable player achievements and sentiments during the test. "Many Runners have maxed out their Faction Rep, adopted a Rook or two, and braved the haunted hallways of Hauler," the studio said. "We've also heard from people saying the deeper they get into progression, the more fun they are having. Tau Ceti can be unforgiving, and we can't wait to see you next week."

This feedback aligns with Marathon's core loop as a PvPvE extraction title set on the alien planet Tau Ceti IV. Players take on the role of Runners, venturing into hazardous zones to fulfill contracts, gather valuable loot, and escape while contending with rival teams and environmental dangers. Progression involves earning faction reputation, customizing loadouts, integrating Rooks (AI-assisted elements), and surviving high-risk areas like the eerie Hauler map. Bungie's comments indicate that while the early stages can feel challenging and punishing, mastery of these mechanics leads to greater satisfaction and engagement.

The developer also acknowledged specific player suggestions for matchmaking and core gameplay tweaks. "Currently, you have the ability to run as a Solo—be it as Rook or as a Runner in a solo lobby—or you can queue in with a duo or a full trio, but we have heard the feedback about duo dedicated lobbies," Bungie added. Additional areas under consideration include expanded keybinding options, adjustments to time-to-kill (TTK) values, and reduced heat generation during core movement to enable smoother pursuits and retreats. These changes aim to enhance the game's signature fast-paced, momentum-driven combat and traversal.

Bungie further committed to refining the game's distinctive holographic interface, which delivers critical information in real time. "We do plan to continue iterating post-launch and want to make sure that you're able to easily navigate, read what's happening mid-fight, manage your equipment effectively, and see your pings without any noise around them," the studio stated. This ongoing support signals Bungie's intent to evolve Marathon based on live player data, ensuring clearer communication and more intuitive management during intense firefights.

The Server Slam open test event drew significant interest and provided Bungie with essential data for final preparations. It launched strongly, reaching 143,000 concurrent players on Steam on the first day. Participants across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC received in-game rewards for joining the event. During the test, players also observed that the phrase "Arc Raiders" was restricted in the in-game chat filter.

As Marathon nears release, Bungie's update reflects optimism about the title's depth and appeal, particularly for players who invest time in its progression systems. The combination of tactical extraction gameplay, persistent rewards, and planned refinements positions the game as a promising contender in the extraction shooter space.
