Magic: The Gathering revealed its latest banned and restricted list changes on May 18, 2026. The update brings significant adjustments across several formats, with a particular focus on addressing dominant strategies in Modern. These modifications aim to enhance diversity and enjoyment while maintaining the integrity of competitive play.

  • Pioneer: Cori-Steel Cutter is banned.

  • Modern: Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury is banned. Lotus Field is banned. Violent Outburst is unbanned. Umezawa's Jitte is unbanned.

  • Legacy: Undercity Informer is banned.

  • Pauper: Bonder's Ornament is unbanned.

  • Alchemy: Sewer-veillance Cam is banned.

  • Standard, Vintage, Historic, Timeless, and Brawl: No changes.

The two bans in Modern stand out as the most impactful for the format's health. Magic: The Gathering designers targeted Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury due to its overwhelming synergy with Arena of Glory in Boros Energy decks. This pair has increasingly dominated online play, reducing viable counter-strategies and pushing other aggro and midrange options out of contention.

"These two cards together hang over games and threaten a bunch of face damage or to distribute two of Phlage's Titan triggers from the graveyard," the announcement explained. "The rate of this pair has led to the deck playing progressively more copies of Arena of Glory over time." Officials chose to ban Phlage rather than Arena of Glory to preserve aspirational synergies in other decks.

The second Modern ban addresses Lotus Field in Amulet Titan strategies. This land enables powerful, non-deterministic loops that create logistical challenges in tournaments while boosting the deck's consistency. Removing it aims to weaken the strongest versions without eliminating the archetype entirely.

"We perceive removing Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury as a meaningful hit to a few of the strongest decks in the format," Carmen Klomparens of Wizards of the Coast stated in the announcement. "We were already concerned with the power level of Amulet Titan... This move is meant to de-power the deck in a direction that addresses some other pain points."

In Pioneer, Cori-Steel Cutter faces a ban to curb the rising dominance of Izzet shells. The card's resilience and pressure have compressed games, limiting breathing room for other archetypes. Designers expect Izzet decks to remain viable but at a healthier power level with clearer counterplay.

Legacy sees Undercity Informer banned after it empowered Oops, All Spells! decks following recent set releases. This adjustment seeks to maintain the format's desired decompression and diversity. Meanwhile, Pauper welcomes Bonder's Ornament back from its ban, potentially supporting slower control strategies in a faster environment.

Alchemy bans Sewer-veillance Cam, which combines with A-Vivi Ornitier to generate excessive mana and wins. This change targets a dominant ladder presence in Best-of-Three queues. No adjustments were made in Vintage, Historic, Timeless, or Brawl, reflecting stability in those formats.

The Standard metagame remains full of Izzet decks alongside evolving Badgermole Cub strategies. Yet no ban has been made in this announcement despite the format's clear concentration around Izzet archetypes. Players continue to explore various shell options as the metagame develops naturally without intervention.
