The Darkhold was never meant to be opened. But the seal is broken, Hel is empty, and the dark side of the Marvel Universe is pouring into Magic: The Gathering — starting with the first Universes Beyond set of 2027.

Wizards of the Coast announced Magic: The Gathering | Marvel: Darkhold Destiny on the game's official website, confirming an April 9, 2027 release date. The set is available for preorder now through local game stores, TCGplayer, Amazon, and other retailers. It marks the next chapter of the Magic and Marvel collaboration, this time descending into the arcane corners of the Marvel Universe.

Unlike a straight adaptation, Darkhold Destiny tells an all-new, original story built with Marvel specifically for Magic. Wizards says the set follows a dimension-hopping narrative that uncovers the secrets of the Dark Dimension and lets players join forces with Marvel's pantheon of gods. The framing is pure gothic Marvel: the world's greatest sorcerers conspired to keep the Darkhold sealed, its pages never meant to be read — and now devils, sorcerers, and vampire-hunting vampires are all in play.

The story will also introduce a brand-new character to the Marvel Universe through a dedicated Marvel Comics release written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. The comic arrives digitally in February 2027 ahead of a physical release in April 2027, timed to the set's launch — meaning readers can follow the arcane storyline on the page before bringing it to the table.

On the card side, Darkhold Destiny ventures into previously uncharted Marvel realms with some of the most requested heroes and villains yet to debut in Magic. Magik steps into the game via her stepping disks, joined by Hela, Mistress of Darkness, and the monstrous Gargantos, the Endbringer. Cards like Rise from the Nether tease the set's graveyard-and-afterlife themes, fitting for a story where Hel itself has been emptied. The set's expansion symbol and a companion MDC symbol were revealed alongside the announcement, giving the release its own visual identity within the growing Marvel line.

Beyond the main set, players will find more arcane curiosities across Commander decks and Scene Boxes, plus new Booster Fun treatments and returning favorites refined for the release. Wizards describes the collaboration as the characters of Marvel told in a distinctly Magic way — a dimension-hopping narrative built by its narrative team with the card game in mind from the start, rather than a set of references bolted onto existing mechanics. Newly revealed cards can be viewed in the set's Card Image Gallery.
