Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni has reaffirmed the franchise's commitment to theatrical releases while balancing an ambitious slate of Disney+ series and animated projects. With The Mandalorian and Grogu set to debut in theaters on May 22, Filoni’s leadership signals a strategic push toward big-screen spectacles alongside continued storytelling on streaming platforms.

Speaking to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, Filoni shared his vision for the future. “For me right now, rather than dealing with hard numbers like that, I'm just looking at the stories and the potential and planning what I'd like to do. I believe in having an overarching idea and then saying, ‘Okay, it’s this many of that, and then we can have that.’ There are certain things that have been in motion already that, obviously, I want to continue,” he explained. This approach underscores Filoni’s focus on narrative quality over rigid quotas as he steers Star Wars into its next era following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure from the top role at the end of last year.

Filoni, the creative force behind beloved entries in the saga, shows no signs of stepping back from hands-on work. He continues to write and oversee key projects while managing Lucasfilm’s broader operations. His comments highlight ongoing momentum across live-action and animation. “There’s a lot on my plate which is exciting, not just in live-action but animation, like Maul – Shadow Lord, which has been very fun, and they’re driving forward,” Filoni noted. The animated series recently concluded its first season on Disney+ and has already been renewed for a second installment.

He also highlighted several live-action efforts in development. Ahsoka Season 2, starring Rosario Dawson, remains a priority, though its release has shifted to later than initially anticipated. Filoni praised director Shawn Levy’s work on Starfighter, an upcoming film featuring Ryan Gosling alongside a stellar ensemble that includes Aaron Pierre, Amy Adams, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith. “I’ve got Ahsoka Season 2 coming, which is very exciting. Shawn Levy did a great job with Starfighter. So there’s a lot,” he said.

The theatrical calendar for Star Wars extends beyond new releases. Filoni pointed to the re-release of Episode IV as another highlight for fans. “And the re-release of Episode IV. There’s so much exciting stuff coming for Star Wars fans,” he added. “I’ve so far really enjoyed collaborating with everybody, and we are well on our way. The future’s in motion now, so it’s exciting.”

Filoni’s extensive history with the franchise spans two decades, including pivotal contributions to The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, and The Book of Boba Fett. He co-created The Mandalorian with Jon Favreau, a partnership that has yielded critical and commercial success. Their collaboration continues with The Mandalorian and Grogu, which brings the popular characters to the big screen for the first time. The film, directed by Favreau and co-written by Filoni, promises to expand the story of Din Djarin and Grogu while introducing new elements to the Star Wars universe.

Under Filoni’s presidency, Lucasfilm appears poised to maintain a steady flow of content. This includes not only feature films but also high-quality series that deepen the lore. The strategy allows the franchise to reach audiences in theaters for event-style experiences while using Disney+ for more serialized storytelling. Projects like Starfighter demonstrate Lucasfilm’s willingness to attract top talent from outside the traditional Star Wars family, potentially broadening appeal.

Filoni’s comments reflect confidence in the current trajectory. By prioritizing compelling stories from established voices and emerging talents, he aims to ensure Star Wars remains vibrant across multiple formats. The upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu serves as an early test of this vision, with its May 22 theatrical debut marking a significant moment for the franchise this year.

As production ramps up on various fronts, Filoni’s dual role as president and creative leader positions him uniquely to guide Star Wars through its evolving landscape. His emphasis on collaboration and long-term planning suggests a future rich with possibilities, from animated adventures on Disney+ to major theatrical events. With multiple projects already in motion, audiences can anticipate a diverse array of Star Wars experiences in the coming years.
