The Loki Season 2 finale delivered a dramatic and emotional climax, showcasing Tom Hiddleston's God of Mischief in a pivotal moment. However, the episode revealed a different outcome than originally planned. The alternate ending for Episode 6 would have changed the fate of a key element in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
In Loki Season 2 Episode 6, the God of Mischief breaks the TVA's Temporal Loom and takes on the responsibility of holding the timelines together, sacrificing the chance to reunite with Sylvie, Mobius, and others he cares about. This sacrifice adds depth and emotional weight to the series finale, resonating with both fans and critics alike.
However, the finale could have ended a little differently. As detailed in the documentary Marvel Studios: Assembled – The Making of Loki Season 2 on Disney+, episode co-director Aaron Moorhead revealed that there was another less destructive plan for the Temporal Loom (via GamesRadar).

"There was a draft of the script of the very end, the very end. Something wasn't sitting right with both of us about it," Moorhead said. "And the issue was, this draft didn't have Loki destroying the Loom. He saved the Loom from imploding and then ascended the throne. We all knew something was up, we just didn't know what. Because it was like, well he's trying to save the Loom, he gets the throne, all of this."
"But the problem was, is that he didn't have the sacrifice and we realized, why doesn't he destroy the Loom and then have to take over the Loom's massive responsibility?" he continued. "He doesn't get anything out of it. It seems so obvious now, it seems like exactly the right choice. But that was a watershed moment in the development of it, when we realized Loki needs to destroy and become the Loom."
Originally, the conclusion may have taken a different direction, but the decision to have Loki embrace the role of overseeing the multiverse and ensuring free will prevailed made for a more satisfying and impactful ending.
Why did Loki need to destroy the Temporal Loom?
The character's rejection of He Who Remains' notion of the Sacred Timeline being the only means of survival sets the stage for significant implications in the future of the MCU. By destroying the Temporal Loom and reviving various timeline branches, Loki takes on a new role, watching over the growing branches from the Citadel at the End of Time. This multiversal version of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, becomes Loki's domain as he ensures the restoration of free will.

While the conclusion might suggest a bittersweet ending for Loki, with him seemingly outside the main world, theories have emerged about the character's future in the MCU. Some speculate that Loki might be busy off-screen, while Tom Hiddleston has hinted that the Season 2 finale serves as a "conclusion" to the character's arc across the six movies and 12 episodes of the Disney+ series.
The Loki Season 2 finale not only left fans reflecting on the character's journey but also sparked anticipation and curiosity about how Loki's newfound role will impact the broader MCU narrative. The decision to alter the originally planned ending underscores the creative choices made to enhance the emotional resonance of the series and set the stage for future developments in the Marvel universe.
