Hirohiko Araki is certainly a visionary when it comes to fantastical storylines so it's easy to forget that JoJo's Bizarre Adventure started out with a horror theme. The mangaka originally introduced the Joestars as heroes who needed to fight a powerful vampire named Dio Brando before JJBA evolved into an action manga with superpowered Stances. So what is Araki's idea of a scary movie? The Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan creator listed down his favorite horror films that are all perfect for Halloween!
Araki's list of favorite horror films features a lot of classics and the mangaka chose one of the most iconic scary flicks in the Number One spot (via X). Not surprisingly, Jaws and Halloween 4 made the top ten which also features thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs and Lord of the Flies, but Araki made sure that George A. Romero takes the top spot.
The list includes the following films:
Night of the Living Dead
Jaws
Johnny Got His Gun
Mississippi Burning
Platoon
Papillon
Halloween 4
Lord of the Flies
The Silence of the Lambs
Alien
While JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has evolved since the Phantom Blood storyline, Araki still went back to his roots with Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan. The spin-off follows JJBA character Rohan Kishibe, a manga artist who travels the world to find inspiration for his stories. Interestingly, Rohan also has a tendency to find horrific tales that would terrify any manga reader.
What's next for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure?
Araki is currently working on The JoJoLands, the ninth installment of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga series. Set in Hawaii in the 2020s, it follows the teenager Jodio Joestar as he aims to achieve wealth through everyday life's "mechanisms." He collaborates with older sibling Dragona and classmate Paco Laburantes, who has a penchant for stealing. Their school principal, Meryl Mei Qi, inadvertently leads Jodio into gang-related activities.
The JoJoLands is currently on its eighth chapter Let's Go Look at Luxury Watches ("Kokyudokei o Mi ni Ikou"), which was published in Ultra Jump's September issue. Chapter 9 will be published in November 2023.
