Even though the entire gaming community is curious to learn more about GTA 6, Grand Theft Auto 5 fans are busy wondering if the long-running game will soon come to an end. For a long time now, fans have thought the game’s developers, Rockstar Games, would release a final update for GTA 5 before bringing it to an end.
Considering the developers have already closed the game’s servers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, there's a high chance it might get discontinued on other platforms as well. However, Rockstar Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive officials, have completely different views on this particular matter. So, which is it; will Rockstar Games discontinue GTA 5 updates anytime soon or not?
Will Rockstar Games continue to support GTA 5 in the future?
Soon, GTA 5 will celebrate its 10th anniversary and is the only Rockstar Games title that has somehow managed to stay in the running for a decade. Although other games also have a pretty huge player community, the sales record of both GTA 5 and GTA Online indicate no signs of declining. Not only that, but the company actually continues to make even more profits off the two games!
Rockstar Games is pretty regular with providing brand-new content for the multiplayer game, such as GTA Online half-yearly DLCs and weekly updates. Despite that, some fans have observed that both the quantity and quality of such patches have gone down significantly, leading many fans to think that Rockstar Games might be slowly downsizing the updates and is gradually killing the game.
Many fans have also taken to Twitter, asking Rockstar Games not to put an end to GTA 5. A Twitter user known as Liane took to the platform, saying, "@RockstarGames pls don’t make gta 5 come to a end it is my favorite game and if you make Gta come to a end I spent over $600 on gta pls don’t end." Another fan tweeted, "@XboxGamePass Knowing rock☆ who knows how long gta will last on gamepass but I guess this means gta 5 is near its end and allowing more people to play what they added witch is alot but people wanting gta 6 now 5 is just to old but hope new players enjoy :)."

Although Rockstar Games has not said much on the matter, Take-Two Interactive has some great news to share with GTA fans. During the Q3 earnings call in February 2023, the current organization president, Karl Slatoff, said, “Throughout the balance of the fiscal year, Rockstar Games will continue to support Grand Theft Auto Online with additional content updates.”
Through this statement, fans are now sure that the multiplayer game will receive more major updates soon, for at least two to three more years. Rockstar Games has shifted most of its focus and resources towards developing GTA 6, and as a result, the updates for the multiplayer game are fewer than ever.
The officials also shared some exciting information about the game’s upcoming updates. Scott Butchard, Rockstar North’s design director, said, “We take inspiration from comments on forums or videos and screenshots players have taken of things they’ve done in-game… There’s a fun example of this that’s coming for this year’s Halloween event that makes me laugh every time…”
This is more than enough consolation for fans that despite having GTA 6 release as a high-priority job, Rockstar Games does not plan on giving up on the current game. They will continue to introduce more new and exciting content to the game in the future.
