Rockstar Games has framed Grand Theft Auto VI as a “single-player experience” at launch, even as the studio’s last numbered entry turned online play into a long-running business of its own. That framing leaves the timing of any follow-up multiplayer mode as one of the biggest open questions around the sequel. Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has now put a year on that question.
Clancy made the remark during an interview with Bloomberg (via IGN), where he said Twitch spent “a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans.” He said the November launch of GTA 6 should already drive a large wave of streams to the platform. He then said an “even bigger” jump in Twitch viewership could arrive in 2027 “when they launch multiplayer.”
Rockstar has not officially announced any plans to release multiplayer support for GTA 6. Because Clancy described ongoing talks between his teams and the studio, the 2027 window reads less like idle speculation and more like an informed reading of those conversations.
GTA 5 also shipped without online play on day one. That game arrived on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online followed only a few weeks later. Clancy’s comments imply a much wider gap this time between the story campaign and any multiplayer counterpart.
The longer stagger would change how publishers and platforms plan around Rockstar’s next cycle. A 2026 single-player debut followed by a 2027 online push would keep GTA 6 in the center of the conversation well after its first holiday window. That is the scenario Clancy sketched when he warned other studios about competing for attention across both years.
Twitch has a direct interest in that calendar. Clancy said the service has been working with Rockstar on how creators can cover the game, which helps explain why he spoke so specifically about a second surge. A delayed multiplayer drop would give streamers a new reason to return to Leonida after the opening campaign has been picked apart.
None of that changes the official product Rockstar has described so far. The company has kept public comments focused on the campaign, the state of Leonida, and the November console launch. Any online mode remains unannounced in name, scope, and date.
GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is widely expected later, though Rockstar has not locked that window in public remarks.
