Fortnite: Save the World, the original cooperative survival mode that launched alongside Fortnite in 2017, is transitioning to a free-to-play model after nearly nine years as a paid experience. Epic Games has announced that starting April 16, 2026, players will be able to access the mode at no cost across multiple platforms, opening the door for a broader community to join the fight against the storm husks.

According to the newly-launched Save the World website, the mode will become available for free on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna. Notably, it will not be supported on smartphones, tablets, or the original Nintendo Switch. This shift marks a significant evolution for the PvE mode, which has long been distinct from the free-to-play Battle Royale experience that propelled Fortnite to global popularity. Save the World emphasizes cooperative gameplay, base building, hero customization, and resource management as players defend against waves of monstrous enemies in a post-apocalyptic world.

To build excitement ahead of the launch, Epic has introduced a community pre-registration campaign. Players can sign up using their Epic account on the dedicated website, contributing to shared milestones that unlock rewards for everyone who participates. The goals are set at 300,000, 700,000, and 1,000,000 registrations. Reaching the first milestone unlocks the Save the World Jess Banner, the second provides Kyle's Construction Spray, and the third grants the Snowstrike Hero—a unique Save the World-specific character. Rewards are distributed progressively: the first two upon milestone achievement, and the Snowstrike Hero on April 16. First-time players will receive it after completing the in-game tutorial, while current players who pre-register get it earlier. Even those who register after a milestone is hit but before the April 16 deadline remain eligible for all unlocked items. Participation requires users to be at least 13 years old (with parental consent for minors) and excludes certain restricted regions.

Pre-registration is now open on the official site. By signing up, participants help unlock community milestones and receive exclusive in-game items, such as a dedicated Save the World Hero. As appreciation for nearly a decade of support, existing players will be granted Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold on April 16. Founders will keep access to their ongoing V-Bucks earnings via standard activities like Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and current Challenges.

This move to free-to-play represents a full-circle moment for Fortnite: Save the World, which began in early access as a premium title before plans for free access were delayed multiple times over the years. The expansion to additional platforms, particularly the Nintendo Switch 2, aligns with broader efforts to make more of Fortnite's ecosystem accessible. With the core gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting weapons, building defenses, and teaming up with friends intact, the update promises to introduce the mode's deep progression systems, hero loadouts, and event-driven content to new audiences while rewarding longtime supporters.
