Netflix has officially unveiled Fool Night, the highly anticipated anime series based on Kasumi Yasuda’s acclaimed seinen manga. The dystopian sci-fi title is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2026. This marks the first-ever collaboration between powerhouse studios Sunrise and SHAFT, with Atsushi Yukawa (Space Dandy) directing the project.

The announcement generated significant buzz at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Netflix showcased a compelling first look at the series. Fool Night blends intense body horror with profound ethical questions in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by eternal night. The unique studio partnership promises a visually striking and narratively ambitious adaptation that stands out in the current anime landscape.

Yuji Yamano, Netflix’s director of content acquisition for anime, presented the upcoming slate to an enthusiastic packed crowd at Annecy who had waited in the boiling heat for new pics and clips. According to Yamano, anime was “once seen as niche and now it’s a global force,” as he highlighted that Netflix anime garnered 1.5 billion views last year with more than 50% of subscribers engaging with the content in some capacity. He further noted that Japanese titles represent the second most-watched non-English-language programming on the platform.

Sunrise brings its mastery of expansive world-building and dynamic action sequences, perfectly complementing SHAFT’s distinctive artistic direction and stylistic innovation. This creative synergy is set to breathe new life into Yasuda’s story of desperation and transformation. Early visuals suggest a haunting atmosphere that captures the manga’s bleak yet thought-provoking tone.

The One Piece received a striking new image during the event. This version starts from the beginning of the East Blue saga in the original manga, utilizing modern animation techniques to deliver a fresh yet familiar retelling of Monkey D. Luffy’s adventures. It stands apart from Netflix’s existing live-action One Piece adaptation while appealing to longtime fans and newcomers alike.

Bass X Machina introduces a steampunk western setting overrun by outlaws, machines, and supernatural threats. Set in a lawless world, the series blends high-octane action with inventive world design. It is slated for release later this year and adds to Netflix’s growing catalog of original genre-blending anime.

The Ribbon Hero, an animated feature from director Yuki Igarashi, is scheduled to launch in August. It tells the story of a lone hero defying a harsh destiny within a delicately crafted world brought to life through polished action sequences. This debut feature highlights Netflix’s support for emerging talent in feature-length animation.

What is Fool Night anime about?

Netflix provided the following synopsis for Fool Night:

Transfloration— a technology that implants seeds into the bodies of those near death, transforming them into plants. It is the desperate measure humanity has chosen to ensure its survival. In a distant future where thick clouds cover the sky, trapping Earth in constant winter and night, most of the planet’s vegetation has withered away. Facing a serious oxygen shortage, humanity has built a society that relies on the meager amount of oxygen provided by Transfloration. A young man, Toshiro Kamiya, lives in poverty and works hard to pay taxes, cover living expenses, and afford medication for his mentally ill mother. However, the cruel reality around him gradually eats away at his hope. In this dark world full of despair, he chooses the path of the “Spiriflor” — the plants that humans transform into.

The central narrative follows Toshiro Kamiya’s harrowing decision to undergo Transfloration amid societal collapse. His personal struggles intertwine with larger questions about the morality of humanity’s survival tactics. Supporting voice talent includes Kouki Uchiyama as Toshiro and Minako Kotobuki in a prominent role.

The manga, serialized since 2020 in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior, has built a dedicated following for its mature exploration of sacrifice and identity. Viewers can look forward to deep character arcs set against a visually oppressive, cloud-shrouded Earth. The adaptation is expected to push boundaries in both thematic depth and animation quality.
