Sophie Turner has officially stepped into the iconic boots of Lara Croft, with Amazon MGM Studios unveiling the first-look image of the actress in character as production kicks off on the highly anticipated Prime Video series.

The reveal, shared today, marks a major milestone for the project, which has been in development since receiving its greenlight in 2024. According to Amazon MGM Studios, principal photography is now underway, bringing the legendary adventurer to life in a fresh live-action adaptation.

The series draws directly from the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise, chronicling the high-stakes exploits of archaeologist and thrill-seeker Lara Croft as she pursues ancient relics and confronts deadly challenges. Turner, celebrated for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, secured the part after an intense and competitive casting process. She leads a stellar ensemble that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.

The creative team is stacked with talent to deliver an authentic and compelling take on the material. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the acclaimed creator of Fleabag and Killing Eve, serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, promising sharp dialogue and nuanced character work. Jonathan Van Tulleken, director of episodes from the acclaimed Shōgun, helms the project as director and executive producer, with Chad Hodge co-showrunning and executive producing.

The series is produced in partnership between Amazon MGM Studios, Story Kitchen, Crystal Dynamics—the stewards of the modern Tomb Raider games—and Legendary Television. Additional executive producers include Jenny Robins for Wells Street Films, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, Timothy I. Stevenson, Michael Scheel, along with co-executive producer Matt McInnis and producer Jan R. Martin.

The first-look photo captures Turner embodying the classic Lara Croft aesthetic, complete with signature elements like the teal tank top, shorts, dual holsters, and braided ponytail that echo the character's origins from the 1996 game. This nod to the franchise's roots suggests the series will honor the adventurous spirit that made Lara a global icon while updating her for contemporary storytelling.

Turner’s casting follows her acclaimed performances in projects like Dark Phoenix and The Staircase, where she demonstrated a knack for portraying strong, layered women—qualities that align well with Croft’s evolution from a pioneering action heroine to a more introspective explorer in recent game iterations. The Tomb Raider franchise, which has sold millions of copies worldwide since its debut, has previously inspired big-screen adaptations starring Angelina Jolie in 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its 2003 sequel, as well as Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot. This Prime Video series aims to carve its own path, potentially delving into ensemble stories and deeper mythological elements.

The Tomb Raider series will stream exclusively on Prime Video upon its release, providing subscribers worldwide with access to the action-packed adventures. While a specific premiere date has not yet been announced, the start of production points toward an eventual debut in the near future as part of Amazon’s growing slate of premium genre programming.
